Production of cellulose insulation

Introduction

This WebQuest was created to teach students about production of cellulose and cellulose insulation. WebQuest can be used as a learning material during lessons of chemistry. This WebQuest is based on the video below.

Task

To complete the task, please watch the video mentioned before and complete the test on the next page. Test consists of ten multiple choice questions. Each question has only one correct answer and all answers can be found in the video. Please, write down the answer to each question on a sheet of paper!

Process

1. What is the purpose of insulation?

A. Regulating the temperature

B. Raising the temperature

C. Lowering the temperature

2. Does cellulose insulation contain formaldehydes?

A. Yes

B. No

C. It emits them

3. What is the maximum allowed weight loss of cellulose insulation after smoulder resistance test?

A. 5%

B. 15%

C. 50%

4. What is cellulose insulation made from?

A. Fiberglass

B. Wood

C. Recycled paper

5. Which is the correct order of machinery used in cellulose insulation production?

A. Primary mixer, shredder, magnet, packaging equipment, shredder

B. Magnet, primary mixer, shredder, fiberizer, packaging equipment

C. Primary mixer, magnet, shredder, fiberizer, packaging equipment

6. What component is shredded paper mixed with during the making of cellulose insulation?

A. Water

B. Boric acid

C. Citric acid

7. What is not the purpose of this component?

A. Stops mold

B. Acts as a pesticide

C. Makes house warmer

8. What conditions are shown to be recreated during testing?

A. Temperature

B. Humidity

C. Pressure

9. What is R-value?

A. Material's ability to give off heat

B. Material's weight compared to volume

C. Material's insulating performance

10. Cellulose insulation's R-value is...

A. Greater than loose-filler mineral insulation's

B. Lower than loose-filler mineral insulation's

C. Same as loose-filler mineral insulation's

Evaluation

Please, compare the answers that you have written down on paper with the correct answers below:

1.A 2.B 3.B 4.C 5.C 6.B 7.C 8.A 9.C 10.A

If you have correctly answered 8 (or more) out of 10 questions, then you have successfully learned about production of cellulose insulation.

If you have answered less than 8 questions correctly, then carefully watch the video again.

Conclusion

During this WebQuest students learnt about cellulose insulation, which is important not only during chemistry lessons, but also in real life, while choosing how to insulate their homes. Cellulose is made from recycled paper so during this lesson, students also learnt about a nature friendly alternative of insulation.
