You are a travel co-ordinator!

Introduction

You have some friends who have just moved into a house in Waratah, right near your school.

They want to visit some of the lovely parts of our city but have no idea how to get to any of them!

You don't have time to take them so you need to give them directions.

You will need to use Google Maps to explain to them how to get there.

Using left and right will be too confusing for them so you need to use street names and compass points to help them find their way to their chosen destinations.

Task

Pair up with a friend, or you can work alone if you prefer.

Click on the Process tab.  Here you will find further instructions and a link to a map.

Record the street names and compass points you will give your friends in your books.

There is no right way to go, as long as you end up at Newcastle Beach, Blackbutt Reserve and Nelson Bay.

Remember though, we don't want to confuse these people so the simplest way is the best way!

Process

Your friends live in High Street, Waratah, between St Philips Christian College and Waratah Public School.

You can find the map here:

https://www.google.com.au/maps/place/St+Philip's+Christian+College+Newcastle/@-32.9040341,151.7209439,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x6b73157539f30059:0x5cd29d0a02e74856!8m2!3d-32.9040386!4d151.7231379?

If you scoll out on your map you will see Newcastle Beach.  It is slightly South East of your school.

North is directly above your school.

East is to the right of your school.

South is directly below your school.

West is to the left of your school.

Keep your map open in a separate tab so you can easily flick between these instructions and the map.  If you are working with a friend you might find it easier to have the map open on one device and these instructions on another device.

Which way will you go first?

Remember to write the names of the streets and the direction you take.

Keep scrolling in and out of your map to keep on track of your direction and your destination.

So they had a great time at the beach but they are now keen to see some of the other sights of Newcastle.

Can you scroll out on your map and find Blackbutt Reserve?  It is South West of your school and South East of John Hunter Hospital.

Write the street names they will follow and the direction they will travel to get to Blackbutt Reserve.  They want to go and see the animals at Blackbutt so the entrance you will need to direct them to is the Carnley Ave entrance.

They loved Blackbutt!  The animals were amazing and they enjoyed getting close to the koalas there.  That has made them want to see some more animals that our amazing part of the world has.

How about dolphin watching at Nelson Bay?  The boats leave from the marina there and they can book their dolphin watch at the Port Stephens Visitor Information Centre.

You will need to scroll out on your map to find Port Stephens.  It is north east of your school and quite a distance away!

Remember to write the street names they will follow and the compass directions to help them find their way.

Evaluation

Congratulations!

Your friends made it from their house near your school to Newcastle Beach, Blackbutt Reserve and Nelson Bay.

If you think you could find an easier way to get to the destinations, have another go.

Conclusion

Remember to:

Never (North)

Eat (East)

Soggy (South)

Worms (West)

and you will never forget your compass points.  They always go clockwise so think of a clock face if you get confused.

Do you know what the dots are in between each of the compass points?  How would you write those compass directions?
