Introduction

You are starting out as a freelance photographer. Your areas of expertise is sports photography and location portraits including weddings and events.

You are looking at purchasing and budgeting for new camera gear. Your requirements include:

  • Lens to cover an angle of view from 84 degrees to 8 degrees (24mm to 200mm in FX format).
  • You will be shooting available light and require a maximum aperture of at least f/2.8 for your lens.
  • Because you shoot location portraits, you will require an off-camera flash unit (controlled by a command unit or secondary on-camera flash)
  • A DSLR camera body which is best suited for the angle of view required by your lens selection (full-frame or cropped sensor).

Task

Your task will be to create an inventory list of equipment you think is required as a freelance photographer. Your list must include prices for next equipment, the manufacturer for the equipment (Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Fuji, etc.)

Compile your list and post it on your blog page no later than 9 am Monday, June 11th.

Process

Steps:

  • Figure out what lens and camera format will best suit the requirements set out in the introduction.
  • Research the lens specifications on the manufacture's website. (Note: the two big companies list the suggested retail prices but many camera dealers over rebates and sales on equipment)
  • Compare the prices of after-market lens companies like Sigma and Tamron. How do these companies compare in quality and affordability?
  • Once you have complied your list of equipment with prices associated with each item, post your list of gear and total cost for purchasing new equipment for your freelance photography business. Remember to add GST and PST (federal and provincial sales tax, 5% and 8% respectfully, to your final total).
