EN4HOSTS - Tourist market

Introduction

This webquest is designed to teach students about the particularities of tourism demand and supply. They will become "experts" in the area, able:

-to know what the tourism market is, how tourism demand is formed, how to segment the tourism market, what is the competition

-to understand the determinants of tourism demand and supply, the elasticity of tourism demand, the criteria for segmentation of the tourist market and the seasonality of demand

-to offer tourist products and make the segmentation of the tourist market

Compared to the commodity market, the tourist market has the following characteristics:

- The place of the offer coincides with the place of consumption, but not with the location of the demand

- The tourist offer is perceived by the applicant as an image formed by the aggregation of all information received directly or indirectly by each potential tourist.

Tourism demand and tourist offer, components of the tourist market, are different: tourist demand is very elastic and subject to permanent fluctuation due to the influence of political, economic, social factors, and the tourist offer is rigid, inelastic in time and space, can not be stored or transformed. These peculiarities may generate a potential gap between them or even the emergence of combinations: rich offer and low demand, high demand and inadequate offer, scattered offer and concentrated demand or vice versa.

In this webquest we will learn about:

 how the tourist demand and offer is formed,

 how the segmentation of the tourism market is achieved,

 how the competition on the tourism market manifests itself.

Conclusion

“The travelers are staying longer and spending more money. When you look at it in that sense, I’d say it’s very positive.”

All tourists are not the same. Just as they may belong to different regions, they may be of different age groups and earn different incomes and have different tastes and preferences to live their lives in a certain manner; the tourists also have different choices when it comes to selecting the mode of travel, destination, and the activities at the destination.
