Introduction

Let us discover what kind of music culture India has.

India, inheritor of one of the oldest  and most evolved music systems in the world.

They believe that music was created by their Gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and lastly Shiva

It’s development began from religious chants called Vedas.

Other sacred hymns were developed and renewed.

The guru teaches Vedas through oral traditions.

The Vinaya teaches students to be humble toward elders, or those who are in authority

Sadhana, practice and discipline.

ELEMENTS OF INDIAN MUSIC

  • Raga - aesthetic melodic form w/peculiar ascending & descending movement. It’s important tone is the Vadi & Samuadavi
  • Tala - composed of long & short beats are accented and unaccented

THEIR VOCAL MUSIC

  • Considered very important
  • Most ancient of all musical traditions
  • Form of prayer & communication between the worshiper and the Supreme Being
  • The singer use vocalization exercises not just for vocal warm-up but as an act of worship
  • Helps the singer clear his/her mind and focus
Task

Since we are talking about the music culture of India, you will also know the instruments they use. Each of you will find out what these instruments are and how they work. Links were given as your references.

Process

1: You will be grouped into five and will be assigned to each instrument.

  • Group 1 is assigned to Ghatam.
  • Group 2 is assigned to Tabla.
  • Group 3 is assigned to Bansuri.
  • Group 4 is assigned to Saraswati Veena.
  • Group 5 is assigned to Sarangi.

2: Pictures of each instrument will be given to you.

3: Each group will research about the assigned instrument.

  • Links are given as references.

4; After doing so, each group will report about their assigned instrument in front of the class.

5: By the end of the activity, you will be able to learn about the different instruments of India.

Evaluation

After the activity, a quiz will be given.

You must be able to fill the blanks with the correct name of the instrument.
