Introduction
Different Types of Graphs.
We are going to check out some different types of graphs:
Year 4 - Pictographs
Year 5 and 6 - Pie charts
What is a Pictograph?
People have been using pictures as a way to communicate for centuries. But did you know that pictures are not just used to tell stories, we can use pictures in Maths to represent data.
What is a Pie Chart?
Don't start feeling too hungry remember it is Maths, so this is the pie you can't eat. A Pie chart is a full circle chart showing who or what gets the biggest (or smallest) piece of the pie.
Task
You will need to research your graph type using the links below and then create a manual copy of a pictograph or pie chart to demonstrate your understanding.
Process
Now it's time to check out how to create and interpret our graphs.
First you need to check out these webpages and follow the "my turn" question links. Show your teacher your quiz scores!

Evaluation
Now it's time to create your own graph - make sure you:
- use a ruler and/or a protractor
- give your graph a title
- for the pictograph - label both of your axis - the y axis is the up and down (vertical) line and the x axis is the side to side (horizontal) line
- for the pie chart - label each of your pieces of pie
- work carefully and neatly.
Year 4 Data - Jimmy's Sports Store wants you to create a picture graph they can use to show customers how many cricket bats they have sold since opening in 2011:
| Year | Number of Cricket Bats Sold |
|---|---|
| 2011 | 20 |
| 2012 | 30 |
| 2013 | 35 |
| 2014 | 40 |
| 2015 | 50 |
| 2016 | 70 |
| 2017 | 95 |
| 2018 | 120 |
| 2019 | 150 |
Year 5 and 6 Data - Jimmy's Sports Store wants you to create a pie graph that shows the different sports equipment sales in 2019.
| Sport | Total Equipment Sales |
|---|---|
| Tennis | 25 |
| Soccer | 30 |
| Basketball | 10 |
| Hockey | 30 |
| Netball | 20 |
| Football | 90 |
| Rugby | 5 |
| Cricket | 150 |
| TOTAL SALES | 360 |
**Hint there are 360 degrees in a full circle and 360 sales total. How does knowing this will make creating your graph easier?
Conclusion
Reflect on your graph - is it clear and easy to read? What would you do differently next time?
Compare your graph with a classmate.
