COVID-19

Introduction

Description: Hello, epidemiologist. I have an important case for you. I am currently loaded with other case files and cannot keep up with the work load. I have been told that thousands of people have been infected with this unknown virus called COVID-19 or "CoronaVirus." Our agency wants you to conduct an investigation to discover the source of this virus and to provide factual information to the public. All the source documents are provided under the "Process" tab. We are counting on you to provide clarity in the midst of misinformation that is found on the internet. Furthermore, we are confident that you will provide us with new leads that are vital to the public's health and wellbeing.

Task

It will be your job to solve basic questions to inform the public about this widespread pandemic. You will study and analyze the current pandemic and compare the pandemic to other ones in modern history. Ultimately, you will decide whether or not we are seriously at risk or whether our modern channels of communication are enough to stop the virus from killing millions.

We need this report by Sunday MARCH 22nd at 11:59pm!!!

Process

Step #1

In order to accomplish the task, you need to answer the following questions first on a Google Doc. Make sure the Google Doc is labeled correctly by having a title called "Step #1" for step one; Step #2 for step 2 and so on:

1). What is Coronavirus?

2). What is COVID-19?

3). What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

4). How does COVID-19 Spread?

5). What can I do to protect myself and prevent the disease from spreading?

6). How long is the incubation period of COVID-19.

7). How long can the virus survive on surfaces?

8). Is this virus transmittable through cats and dogs?

To answer the questions, our friends at the World Health Organization (WHO) sent us this website to aid our research. Please search the website diligently to answer the questions: https://www.who.int/emergencies/diseases/novel-coronavirus-2019

Step #2

We need to know how many actual cases and potential cases there are in the United States. There is a difference between actual cases and potential cases. In order to calculate the number of potential cases in the United States, our friends at Khan Academy sent us a tutorial on how to calculate potential cases. Additionally, use the situation reports from WHO to determine the confirmed cases in the United States. Make sure to use most recent situation report.

Step #3

We need to learn from past diseases such as the Spanish Flu of 1918. I need a detailed chart that outlines the similarities and differences between the Spanish Flu and COVID-19. Additionally, I need you to make an assessment of whether or not this virus is as deadly as the Spanish Flu. Make sure to use the following resources in your search:

CDC "The Deadliest Flu" - The Complete Story of the Discovery and Reconstruction of the 1918 Pandemic.

Step #4

While the start of the Pandemic originated in Wuhan China, it seems Europe is now the epicenter for the virus? Your goal is to answer the question why? Use the resource by John Hopkins University to track the spreading of the disease. Also, make an assessment as whether or not the United States will be the new focal point in the upcoming weeks. Please make sure to provide your rational.

Step #5

We want to have a visual representation of what could potentially happen in a serious crisis. However, not all the information provided by the media and entertainment industries are factually correct. Your job is to separate the facts from the exaggerated propaganda used to scare people into panic buying. Watch the movie "Outbreak" and conduct an analysis that does the following:

1). Compare and Contrast the similarities and differences between the virus in the movie and COVID-19.

2). Locate areas where the information in the movie is correct and when the movie portrays false information about viruses.

The movie can be found on Netflix, Hulu, and  Amazon Prime if you have any of those accounts. I will provide a link that has the movie, but there will be annoying pop-ups you need to carefully remove. When you click the link, make sure to scroll down a little bit and hit the "Server F1" button to ensure the video works. Again, if you have any of those accounts use that instead!

Step #6

After you complete all the steps above, write an essay (introduction, three body paragraphs, conclusion) that needs to be presented at the UN Convention by the end of the week. The fate of the world is dependent on your analysis.

Given all that you researched about COVID 19, is this virus deadly enough to kill a significant amount of our population? OR is this just an exaggeration on behalf on the media and our health organizations like WHO & CDC. You need to use 3 of the sources above or you can provide any other sources in your essay from the internet.

Here are links to aid you on writing an argumentative essay.

Evaluation

Your evaluation will be based on the following:

1. All questions (steps #1, #3, #5) are answered in complete sentences and enough information is provided. (20% of grade)

2. Mathematical calculation (step #2) on predicted cases is within a reasonable estimate. (10% of grade)

3.  Movie comparison to real life (step #5) is complete and provides sufficient information. (20% of grade)

4. Completed Essay (step 6) with all the components. (50% of grade)
