Travel the Biomes WebQuest

Introduction

Welcome to your new position at See the World Travel! 

Working with our newly formed team, you will be using your skills to increase travel to various parts of the world by advertising and selling vacation packages to our clients.  You have been hired to show our travelers, just how exciting and reachable these destinations are through your sale and presentation skills.

Task

All new hires will be separated into groups and working with your group you will develop a presentation to show to perspective clients interested in traveling to various parts of the world and sell them to travel with us!  Each group of employees will be responsible for representing a various area of the world.  After all presentations are completed, the other travelers will vote on what destination they would like to book for their vacation.

Vacation Package Options (You will be assigned one of the following):

  • Tundra
  • Taiga
  • Tropical Rain Forest
  • Temperate Forest
  • Desert
  • Grassland
  • Savannah
  • Open Ocean
  • Freshwater 
Process

Each team of new hires will consist of 4 people, and you will be assigned a part of the world, by biome, that you will sell to the perspective travelers.  We hired individuals who were experts in specific areas of ecological study, and each group will have one expert in each area.  Each member is responsible for researching their ecological area of expertise and sharing that information with the other team members as well as adding it to your PowerPoint presentation.

Ecological Areas of Expertise

  • Zoologist (animal expert)
  • Botanist (plant expert)
  • Meteorologist (weather expert)
  • Geographer (map and area expert)
  1. Each team member will be assigned their expert role by choosing a paper out of the beaker at your workstation.  You are researching this role for your assigned biome only.
  2. Using the resource list of websites (under credits), you will complete the research sheet provided with facts that you find pertaining to your assigned role.  This sheet will be handed in at the conclusion.
  3. Examples of the types of questions you will be trying to answer are below:
    1. Zoologist - What type of animals live here?  What are some traits that animals living in this area need to survive?
    2. Botanist - What type of plants are found here?  What are some traits that plants living in this area need to survive?
    3. Meteorologist - What type of clothes should they pack?  What's the weather like?  Climate?
    4. Geographer - What part of the world is this biome located in that they can choose as their destination?  What the topography of the land like?
  4. Rejoin your group and working in a shared PowerPoint each team member will develop 3 slides sharing their information.  Slides must include pictures.  
  5. As a group, you will then be adding 3 more slides to the end of the presentation.  These slides are listed below:
    1. A short video clip showing the area.
    2. A slide with a list of excursions or activities that are available (Think of it as a list of things to do.)
    3. Things that they need to be on the lookout for!  (Are there dangers they should know about?)
  6. Total your group should have a total of 16 slides in their presentation (including a title slide).
  7. All presentations will be presented to the class.  The trip with the most people going will be the winner, receiving 10 bonus points. The runner-up will receive 5 bonus points.
