Learn About Pre-Colonial Indigenous Culture

Introduction

You'll be learning about how Canada's Indigenous Peoples lived before Europeans arrived. For over 12,000 years, people have lived in Canada and have had thriving cultures. In this webquest, you will discover some of the fascinating facts about Indigenous people across Canada. 

 

Task

Before Canada was a country and before Europeans came, there were many different tribes which you will learn more about. In this TVO learn action task, you will learn about Indigenous peoples and their traditional territory. Study the map of Indigenous tribes. Then click on the Activity link and complete the questions based on the readings about the various Indigenous people that inhabited this land.

Process

Click on the link below. After you finish studying the map, reading about the various Indigenous tribes and answering the Activity questions, you will choose either the Huron-Wendat or Algonquin First Nations to read about. If you choose Huron-Wendat, test your knowledge by completing the Check Your Understanding section. If you choose the Algonquin First Nations, test your knowledge by answering the Review questions.

Evaluation

After learning about either the Huron-Wendat or the Algonquin First Nation, you will type out the 5 most interesting things you learned in a separate document to be handed into your teacher. Please include why you thought the point was interesting. 

If you choose Huron-Wendat, also answer the following: 

What is a confederacy? 

What is a matriarchal society? 

Why did the Huron-Wendat relocate every 10-15 years? 

If you choose Algonquin, also answer the following: 

Explain what alliances the Algonquin made and why.
