Next week, we are going to the zoo! The zookeepers have asked me to cover the different habitats you might see for the animals they have. You are also going to pick a habitat you learned about today and draw everything an animal would need to survive there. We are going to share these drawings with the zookeepers when we visit. After you have completed the lesson and the necessary assignments for the day, you will start on your drawing.
You will complete this graphic organizer as you go through the activities.
Task
With your shoulder partner, you are going to learn more about habitats, the animals that live there, and how they survive. Make sure you are listening to the video, reading the article, and observing the pictures in detail. Once you have completed your graphic organizer, you will bring it to me to be checked, and then answer the ten questions at the bottom.
Once you have completed all of this, you will then move on to your drawing to share with the zookeepers!
Process
What is a Habitat?
A habitat is a place where an organism makes its home.
Watch this quick video with your partner to learn about the habitats of the animals we could see on our trip to the zoo!
Habitats are very important for all living things, even you and I. When we go to the zoo, you will notice that the zookeepers have worked very hard to make the animals feel at home and give them an accurate habitat. Think about your habitat and the things in it that are special to you and helps you survive.
Now, you'll go to this website to get a better image of the different habitats and the animals that reside there.
7. Circle True or False. A wolf would survive in the desert. True False
8. Which animal resides in the ocean?
A. starfish
B. tree frog
C. alligator
D. camel
9. _____________ covers the top and bottom of planet earth at North and South Poles.
10. Circle True or False. You could survive without a shelter? True False
Evaluation
You are almost done! Once you are done with the graphic organizer, bring that to me for checking, and make sure to bring your answers to the questions to me once that is completed as well.
I will then give you paper and colors to complete the accurate drawing of your habitat. When you turn in your papers make sure you know the habitat you would like to pick. I will be creating a list of the ones everyone is picking. Take your time making the drawing look as neat and scientific as you can.
Conclusion
Congratulations! You have learned so much about habitats, animals, and their survival. I cannot wait to see the drawings you come up with and share them with the zookeepers.
Performance Expectation: Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.
Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on the diversity of living things in each of a variety of different habitats. Students could explore different habitats in the community (e.g., schools, aquariums, and neighborhoods).
Disciplinary Core Ideas: There are many kinds of living things in any area, and they exist in different places on land, in water, and in the air. (LE.LS4D.a)
