Kitten Math WebQuest

Introduction

Bringing Home a New Kitten | Cat Advice ...Math Symbol Clipart – ShareFaith Media

Welcome to the Kitten Math WebQuest! Get ready to explore many different math equations using kittens. In this WebQuest you’ll use your math skills that we have learned this year to solve real-world problems about these cute animals. You are going to use subtraction, addition, and many other topics that we have covered in class!

Lets get started 5th graders!

Task

Prioritize Your To-Do's With Task List ...Kitten Growth Stages & Development by ...

Please complete the following tasks on a piece of paper. Be sure to make it colorful. After you complete the tasks you are going to organize your solutions into a poster format. Create a poster or a online presentation. Include your calculations, graphs, and any interesting facts you found about kittens. Lets get started! Use the process page for links to websites.

Research how many kittens are usually in a litter. Hint (Multiply)

1.)  If a mother cat has 6 kittens in her litter and she has 5 total litters, how many kittens does she have in total?

2.) If each kitten eats 3/4 cup of food a day, how much food do all the kittens need for a week?

Find out the average weight of a kitten (usually between 1 to 4 pounds).

1.) Calculate the total weight of 6 kittens that weigh 2.3 pounds each and 8 that weigh 4.7 pounds each.

Division Practice:

1.) A shelter has 24 kittens. If they adopt out 6 kittens each week, how many weeks will it take to adopt all the kittens?

Think: 24 kittens÷6 kittens/week=?

2.) Create a bar graph to show how many kittens are adopted over 4 weeks if 6 kittens are adopted each week.

Graphing help:

Each week, 6 kittens are adopted.

On your graph, each bar should go up to ___ for each week.

Label your weeks on the bottom (Week 1, Week 2, Week 3, Week 4).

Multiplication and Subtraction Practice:

Research the average cost of adopting a kitten (approximately $300).

1.) If your family adopts 2 kittens, what will be the total cost?

2.) If you have a budget of $1,000, how much money will you have left after adopting the kittens?

Measurement Practice

1.) If the adoption center has a rectangular play pen for the kittens that is 12 feet long and 7 feet wide, what is the area of the play pen?

Remember: LENGTH x WIDTH

Bonus:

1.) Garfield goes from 2 pounds to 10 pounds in a month. Susie goes from 1 pound to 7 pounds in a month. What is the average weight gain the kittens experience?

2. Garfield ate 2/3 of his food this morning and Susie ate 3/4 of her food this morning. What is the fraction of the total food ate?

3.) A kitten measures 5 inches long and his brother measures 7.8 inches long. How many inches total do they measure?

Now I want you to play this cat wars game https://www.mathgames.com/play/cat-wars.html. You are going to click on grade 5 and select the skill you want to practice. I encourage you to challenge yourself by working on the division and multiplication skills.

Process

Tasks | Cegedim Healthcare SolutionsMath and Cats Silly Kitten" Poster ...

To accomplish these tasks you are going to need to work throughly and slowly. Its important not to rush that way you do not make any mistakes!

-First, you will be assigned groups.  Within your groups, you will research and record any valuable information that you can discover about kittens. This will help you when you need facts.

-Work on the math problems using your notes and everything we have learned so far. Show your work for each calculation.

-Now, I want you to create a poster with 10 facts about kittens using the websites below. You should add the answers to the kitten equations as well! You will also add your own kitten math problem to show you understood what we did. Draw pictures and add color.

Conclusion

Now that you have completed your Kitten Math WebQuest, you have learned so much about new born kittens!  At this point, you should know everything about kittens and math! You’ve applied your math skills to real life situations and hopefully learned so much! Now you can share everything you learned with others and maybe even inspire them to adopt a kitten!

Please answer the following questions in complete 5th grade sentences:

1.) What was the most interesting fact you learned about a kitten but didn't know before? Would you ever adopt a furry friend?

2.) What skill did you choose for the cat wars game? Was it easy or difficult?

3.) Did you consider this WebQuest to be too easy, too hard, or just right? Please explain.

I hope you enjoyed this assignment 5th graders. I cant wait to see your final posters!

Teacher Page

On this page you will find an overview of the purpose, objectives, and learner description, along with the standards students will meet when they complete this WebQuest. This guided lesson plan will support teachers as they introduce students to the WebQuest activity.

Objectives

-Enhance students' problem-solving skills using real-world scenarios.

-Reinforce understanding of multiplication, division, measurement, and geometry.

-Encourage research skills and data representation through graphs.

Purpose:

The Kitten Math WebQuest helps 5th-grade students practice math skills in a fun way by solving problems about adopting and caring for kittens.

Rationale:

Using kittens makes math more entertaining because students love animals. Students get to learn math while also learning the importance in caring for animals and understanding real-life situations.

Prerequisites:

-Students should know how to:

-Multiply and divide numbers.

-Add and subtract numbers.

-Understand area and perimeter.

-Create graphs.

Learner Description:

This WebQuest is for 5th grader. They enjoy hands-on activities and working in groups. Students may have different levels of math experience so its important they they work hard and help each other. Students are beginning to gain independence and this WebQuest should help.
