Frequently Asked Questions About Mental Health in 2024

 

 

Did you know that 1 in 5 people will experience a mental health issue at some point in their life?. Nowadays, mental health challenges are far more prevalent and yet until this day not much effort is being done to address them. It is with no doubt that humans, at one point in their lives will feel that there mentally unstable. However, why is that we often see that many individuals feel hesitant to seek professional help and openly talk about the challenges they face with their mental health? 

Welcome to the Mental Health Awareness Webquest. Whether we are aware of it or not, mental health is a very a crucial part of our overall well-being. While many individuals believe that physical health is what matters most, mental health is equally important and even may even take precedence over physical health. This is due to several reasons as it affects how we think, feel, and act in our daily lives. It is doubtedly a key component of our overall wellbeing.  Good mental health allows individuals to navigate life's challenges effectively and fosters resilience. Mental health affects cognitive processes such as decision-making, problem-solving, and concentration.

With that being said, in this webquest, you will:

  • Explore what mental health is and why it matters.
  • Learn about common mental health disorders.
  • Understand the stigma surrounding mental health.
  • Discover strategies to maintain good mental well-being.
  • Learn how to help others who might be struggling.

 

By the end of this quest, you will create an informational brochure or poster that promotes mental health awareness and provides useful strategies to maintain mental wellness.

Task

 

In a poll I did on instagram 99% of creative professionals said they had struggled with at least one of these things.

 

Your task is to create an informational brochure or poster designed to raise awareness about mental health in your school or community. This project not only makes you more knowledgeable about this topic but also helps you contribute to society by educating others. Hence, you will need to as part of a group to critically analyze, evaluate  and present the information from credible resources on various aspects of mental health.

The brochure or poster should include:

  1. Introduction to what mental health is.
  2. Present common mental health disorders.
  3. Discuss the stigma surrounding mental health  and its impact on individuals trying to seek help.
  4. Ways to breaking the stigma and promoting mental health awareness.
  5. Provide mental health resources.

 

Below are the steps that guide you as you create your brochure. Here is what your brochure or poster should entail:

  1. Introduction to Mental Health:

    • Start with providing a concise definition of mental health and explain Provide a clear and concise definition of mental health, explaining why it is a crucial aspect of overall well-being.
    • Provide background information about mental health. Briefly mention types of mental disorders.
    • Emphasize the importance of maintaining good mental health. Contrast it with physical health and highlight that it is just as equally as important.
  2. Overview of Common Mental Health Disorders:

    • Whilst doing your research, choose at least three mental health disorders (Examples may include depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder) and provide a brief overview of each.
    • For each disorder, make sure to mention relevant information associated with it such as the symptoms , the causes and the many treatments that are available to help individuals. 
    • Be sure to mention how these disorders can affect daily life and the importance of seeking professional help when needed.
  3. Research on Mental Health Stigma:

    • This is one of the most important points to tackle! Explain what stigma is and how it manifests in various ways when talking about mental health. Explain how it is seen through discrimination, stereotypes etc.
    • Explore on how stigma  can ultimately affect individuals especially while attempting to seek professional help.
    • Examine the historical and cultural roots of stigma. Compare different societies/communities and discover the reason behind some communities struggling more with mental health stigmatization than others.
    • Identify key factors that contribute to the ongoing stigma, such as misinformation, cultural taboos, and the portrayal of mental health in the media.
  4. Present solutions to this issue and ways to break the stigma:

    • Present practical solutions for breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. As a group, you will need to critically think and focus on multiple things such as beginning to educate others on this matter, promoting open conversations, emphasizing on sympathy and overall support these individuals with mental health issues.
    • You should include the role of schools, institutions , and social media in creating a more understanding and supportive environment.
    • Explore different alternatives in educating children from a very young age.  Propose activities like organizing awareness campaigns, providing peer support, or inviting mental health professionals to  schools and educating young children.
  5. Promoting Mental Well-being:

    • Your task here is to provide a list of daily habits and strategies for maintaining good mental health. As part of this task you can (optional) ask individuals around tips in maintaining a stable mental health. Conduct primary research as well showcasing ways to cope with everyday life stress. Include examples such as practicing Yoga, getting enough sleep and exercising. 
    • Explain how these practices help prevent mental health issues and improve overall emotional resilience.
  6. Provide Mental Health Resources:

    • Find reliable resources whereby you provide a list that aids individuals that are struggling with their mental health.
    • Provide a brief description of each resource, detailing how it can assist people who are struggling with mental health issues, whether it's offering counseling, providing information, or connecting individuals with local mental health services.

Final Outcome:

Finally, you will need to  showcase a well-designed brochure or poster. Your poster should be captivating, informative, engaging and most importantly persuading. It should be informative, persuading, and engaging. Try to be creative while showcasing professional and accurate/reliable information. As a group, you will be able to present it to the rest of the class.

Note that the brochure can be created through utilizing design tools such as Canva or any or digital tools that you think will help you present your poster effectively.

To complete this webquest, follow the steps below. Use the links and resources provided to gather all necessary information for your final product.

Step 1: You will need to understand what Mental health is. Understanding Mental Health

  1. Objective: Look up the definition of mental health and its importance.
  • Resource to use: watch the video 


    Task:
  • Answer the following:
  •  What is mental health and why it is essential for overall well-being?

Step 2: Common Mental Health Disorders

Research about common mental health disorders, such as depression, anxiety, and  PTSD.

  • Resource: Use any reliable source to research three common mental health disorders.

      Task:

  • Use the above links you gathered and the video above to answer the following questions:
  • What are the symptoms for the 3 different mental disorders?
  • What are the causes? What are some treatments?
  • This can be done through creating a table where each of these questions are answered. Make sure to compare and contrast between each of mental disorders.

 

 Step 3: Stigma and Mental Health

  • Objective: Educate yourself around the notion of stigma on mental health and its effect on seeking help individuals.

  • Task: Brainstorm with your teammates the impact of stigma on mental health. Write a short answer whereby you explain its origins, its effects on individuals and ways we can combat it

Step 4: Ways to break the stigma surrounding mental health and present solutions/tips to individuals struggling.

  • Objective: Propose daily tips and habits that aid individuals in maintaining good mental health.

  • Task: Prepare a list of at least five strategies for maintaining mental health.

  • Objective: Identify and provide mental health resources that students can access.

  • Task: Choose three resources (websites, helplines, or apps) that provide mental health support and describe how they can help someone in need.

 

Step 6: Create Your Brochure or Poster

  • Objective: Utilize the information you have compiled to create an engaging and informative brochure or poster that raises mental health awareness.
  • Task: Your brochure or poster should be divided accordingly:
  • An introduction to mental health.
  • A section on common mental health disorders.
  • Information on mental health stigma, including its origins and ways to break it.
  • Strategies for maintaining mental well-being.
  • Mental health resources (websites, apps, or helplines).
  • Tools:
  • You can use online design tools such as Canva or Brochure templates as digital tools.

Step 7: Present

  • Objective: You will be able to present it as a group to showcase your work.

Conclusion

 

You have completed your Mental Health Awareness Webquest! You have successfully through researching learned about the importance of mental health, the stigma surrounding it and you were able to contibute to society by educating your peers. Your final productwhether a brochure or poster will undoubtedly raise awareness in your community and contribute to reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues.

By completing this webquest, you are better equipped to understand and promote mental health, both for yourself and others. Remember, mental health is just as important as physical health, and reaching out for support is a sign of strength.
