7th Grade, Physical Education- Discovering Muscles with Movement

Introduction

Could Running Be the Key to Empowering Kids? - ParentMap

We move around every day, constantly doing things throughout the day using all of our body parts. But do we know how that is? Have you ever wondered why your legs feel sore after running, why your arms get tired from shooting basketballs, or how your core can get sore after balancing or gymnastics? This is due to your muscles and the key role that they play in everyday movement and in your favorite sport/activities. Having a better understanding of how muscles work together to move the body safely and efficiently is very important. Today the goal is to discover the main muscles used in popular sports/activities.

Task

By the end of the WebQuest the students will be able to-

  • Identify the main muscles of the body.
  • Identify what muscles are being used during movement.
  • Identify what muscles are used in a sport/activity.

Process

Step One- To start exploring you will go online and look up the main major muscle groups inside of the body to get familiar.

Step Two- Look through and choose 5 popular Sports or physical activities that stand out to you.

Step Three- Investigate the muscle use in the movements of each sport.  Ex. (what movement is performed most often)

Step Four- Create a diagram with the 5 sports and a little description for each sport.

Step Five- Name two major muscles used during each sport.

Step Six- Give one example of the muscle being used during the sport.  Ex. (Quad used for kicking ball in soccer)

Conclusion

Now you can start to understand how important of a role our muscles play and what role they each do. You have discovered how muscles work together to kick, throw, and run just to name a few. You can take the information you have learned along the way and apply it to your daily lives. If you play or do one of the sport/activities that we discussed think back on what you have learned. Pay attention to your muscles and the movements that you make. There are important muscles working in the background.
