But how exactly does the body move? Why do bones not bend like muscles? What happens when a joint is injured? How can people protect their muscles and bones from injury?
In this lesson, you will become anatomy investigators. Your mission is to explore the human musculoskeletal system and discover how bones, joints, muscles, tendons, and ligaments work together to produce movement. You will also connect anatomy to real-life situations such as posture, exercise, sports injuries, and daily body movements.
Task
Your group will create a Human Movement and Injury Prevention Guide.
Your final product may be a slideshow, infographic, digital brochure, poster, or short video presentation.
Your guide must include:
- A clear explanation of the main parts of the musculoskeletal system.
- A diagram or labeled illustration of bones, joints, and muscles involved in one body movement.
- An explanation of how bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints work together.
- A real-life example of a common musculoskeletal injury or problem.
- Three practical ways to protect the musculoskeletal system.
- A short reflection on what you learned about body movement and anatomy.
Process
Step 1: Form Your Anatomy Investigation Team
Work in groups of 3–5 members. Assign roles:
- Lead Researcher: Finds important anatomy facts from the online resources.
- Diagram Specialist: Creates or labels body diagrams.
- Movement Analyst: Explains how a selected body movement happens.
- Health and Safety Adviser: Researches injury prevention and healthy body habits.
- Presenter/Editor: Organizes the final output and prepares the presentation.
Step 2: Build Background Knowledge
Use the online resources provided by your teacher. As you explore, answer these guide questions:
- What are the major functions of the skeletal system?
- What are the major functions of the muscular system?
- What are joints, and why are they important for movement?
- What is the difference between tendons and ligaments?
- How do muscles and bones work together to move the body?
- What are common injuries or problems involving bones, joints, or muscles?
- How can people protect their musculoskeletal system?
Step 3: Choose One Body Movement
Choose one movement to investigate. Examples:
- Bending the elbow
- Kicking a ball
- Walking
- Jumping
- Lifting a backpack
- Writing with a pen
- Squatting
- Raising the arm
- Climbing stairs
Identify the body parts involved in the movement.
Your group should answer:
- Which bones are involved?
- Which joints are involved?
- Which muscles help create the movement?
- What role do tendons play?
- What role do ligaments play?
- What could happen if one part is injured?
Step 4: Create a Labeled Anatomy Diagram
Create or use a simple diagram showing the movement you selected. Label at least:
- 2 bones
- 1 joint
- 2 muscles
- Tendons
- Ligaments, if visible or applicable
- Direction of movement
You may draw your own diagram or create a digital version. Make sure your diagram is neat, accurate, and easy to understand.
Step 5: Investigate a Common Injury or Problem
Choose one injury or condition related to your selected movement. Examples:
- Sprain
- Strain
- Fracture
- Dislocation
- Tendinitis
- Poor posture
- Muscle cramps
- Knee injury
- Back pain
Research the following:
- What body part is affected?
- What usually causes the injury or problem?
- What symptoms might a person experience?
- How can this injury or problem be prevented?
- Why is proper body mechanics important?
Step 6: Design Your Human Movement and Injury Prevention Guide
Your final guide must include:
- Title
- Introduction to the musculoskeletal system
- Labeled diagram of your chosen body movement
- Explanation of how the movement happens
- Description of one related injury or problem
- Three injury-prevention tips
- At least three facts from online resources
- A short conclusion or reflection
