Imagine that you are a young environmental scientist. Every day, large amounts of plastic, chemicals, and other waste enter our oceans. This pollution affects marine animals, plants, and even people who depend on the ocean for food and livelihood.
But here is the question:
What can we do to help protect our oceans from pollution?
In this WebQuest, you will become an environmental researcher. You will explore reliable websites, investigate the causes and effects of ocean pollution, and work with your classmates to develop practical solutions.
Task
Your task is to investigate ocean pollution and propose practical solutions to reduce it.
Working individually or in small groups, you will:
- Identify the major causes of ocean pollution.
- Investigate how ocean pollution affects marine life and humans.
- Research possible solutions to the problem.
- Choose the three most effective solutions.
- Create an “Save Our Oceans” awareness poster or digital presentation.
- Present your work to the class.
Your final output should clearly show:
- The problem
- Causes of ocean pollution
- Effects on marine life and people
- Three practical solutions
- A short message encouraging others to protect the ocean
Process
Step 1 – Form Your Group
Form a group of 3–4 students.
Assign roles to each member, such as:
- Researcher – gathers information
- Recorder – takes notes and organizes information
- Designer – prepares the poster or presentation
- Presenter – presents the group's findings
You may work together and help one another regardless of your assigned role.
Step 2 – Investigate the Problem
Use the provided online resources to answer these questions:
- What is ocean pollution?
- What are the major sources of ocean pollution?
- What types of waste commonly enter the ocean?
Write down important information and record the websites where you found your answers.
Step 3 – Investigate the Effects
Research the effects of ocean pollution.
Consider:
- How does pollution affect marine animals?
- How does plastic waste affect the ocean?
- How can ocean pollution affect humans?
- How can pollution affect fishing and coastal communities?
Step 4 – Find Possible Solutions
Research different ways to reduce ocean pollution.
Think about solutions that can be practiced by:
- Individuals
- Schools
- Communities
- Businesses
- Governments
Choose three solutions that you believe would have the greatest impact.
Step 5 – Create Your Final Product
Create a Save Our Oceans poster or digital presentation.
Your output should include:
Title: Save Our Oceans!
Problem: What is ocean pollution?
Causes: What causes ocean pollution?
Effects: What happens because of ocean pollution?
Solutions: What three things can people do to help?
Call to Action: Create a short and memorable message encouraging people to protect the ocean.
Step 6 – Present Your Work
Present your poster or digital presentation to the class.
Each group should explain:
- What they discovered.
- Why ocean pollution is a serious problem.
- Which solutions they selected.
- Why they believe their solutions can help.
