PROTECT OUR ECOSYSTEM: BECOME AN ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST!

Introduction

Imagine that you have been hired as a young environmental scientist. Your community is concerned about changes in the local environment, such as pollution, habitat destruction, loss of plants and animals, and improper waste disposal.

Your mission is to investigate an ecosystem, discover the problems that threaten its biodiversity, and propose realistic solutions.

Biodiversity refers to the variety of living organisms in an area. Healthy ecosystems depend on the interactions among many living and nonliving components. When biodiversity decreases, the balance of an ecosystem can also be affected.

You will work as a team of environmental scientists. Your goal is not simply to find information—you must investigate, analyze evidence, and develop a solution.

Essential Question:

What can we do to protect biodiversity and maintain a healthy ecosystem?

Task

Your team will investigate one ecosystem or habitat and determine:

1. What living and nonliving components are found in the ecosystem?

2. What organisms depend on one another?

3. Why is biodiversity important?

4. What human activities threaten the ecosystem?

5. What evidence shows that the ecosystem needs protection?

6. What realistic actions can people take to protect it?

 

Final Product

Create a Digital Environmental Action Campaign containing:

 

• An introduction to your chosen ecosystem

• At least 5 organisms found in the ecosystem

• Living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic) components

• A simple food chain or food web

• At least 2 threats to the ecosystem

• Evidence from reliable Internet sources

 At least 3 practical solutions

• A short “Call to Action” encouraging people to protect the ecosystem

You may present your campaign as a digital poster, infographic, PowerPoint presentation, Canva presentation, or short educational video.

Process

Step 1 – Form Your Environmental Scientist Team

Work in groups of 3–5 students.

Assign roles such as:

 

• Researcher – finds and records information

• Fact Checker – checks whether information is reliable

• Designer – creates the visual presentation

• Writer – organizes the team's findings

• Presenter – explains the final product

Everyone must participate.

 

Step 2 – Choose an Ecosystem

Choose one ecosystem to investigate.

Examples include:

 

• Tropical rainforest

• Coral reef

• Mangrove forest

• Freshwater ecosystem

• Coastal ecosystem

• Grassland

• Wetland

• Your local community ecosystem

Try to choose an ecosystem that is important to your community.

 

Step 3 – Investigate the Ecosystem

Use the Internet resources provided by your teacher.

Find information about:

 

• Climate and environment

• Plants

• Animals

• Other organisms

• Water and soil

• Food chains

• Relationships among organisms

• Importance of biodiversity

Record important facts and the websites where you found them.

 

Step 4 – Identify the Problem

Investigate threats affecting your ecosystem.

Consider questions such as:

 

• Is pollution a problem?

• Is habitat being destroyed?

• Are animals being hunted?

• Is overfishing occurring?

• Is climate change affecting the ecosystem?

• Is plastic waste causing problems?

• Are invasive species affecting native organisms?

Choose at least two major threats.

 

Step 5 – Analyze the Evidence

Do not simply copy information from websites.

Discuss with your group:

 What does the evidence tell us?

For example:

• If one important species disappears, what could happen to other organisms?

• If a habitat becomes polluted, how could plants, animals, and humans be affected?

• Why is biodiversity important for the health of an ecosystem?

 

Step 6 – Develop Solutions

Work together to develop at least three realistic solutions.

Your solutions should answer:

“What can students, families, communities, or governments do to help?”

Examples:

• Reduce plastic waste

• Protect habitats

• Plant native trees

• Support sustainable fishing

• Reduce pollution

• Establish protected areas

• Educate the community

• Properly manage waste

 

Step 7 – Create Your Environmental Action Campaign

Use Canva, PowerPoint, Google Slides, or another digital tool.

Your final product should include:

Title → Ecosystem → Biodiversity → Threats → Evidence → Solutions → Call to Action

Make your presentation informative, creative, and easy to understand.

 

Step 8 – Present and Reflect

Present your Environmental Action Campaign to the class.

After presenting, answer:

1. What did you learn about biodiversity?

2. What was the most surprising thing you discovered?

3. Which threat is most serious?

4. Which solution do you think is most realistic?

5. What personal action can you take to help protect the environment?
