History lesson for 5th grade

Introduction

Imagine living over 100 years ago during World War 1. New inventions were changing how people communicated, fought, and traveled. Soldiers, families, and nurses had to adapt to how crazy the world got with the evolution of technology. In this WebQuest, you will be exploring how these inventions shaped everyday life and war itself.

Task

Your mission for today will be to become a WWI Technology investigator.

you will work in small groups to research one major WWI technological advancement  and then create a short presentation explaining:

  • What the technology was
  • How it worked
  • How it changed life for soldiers or civilians

  • Why it mattered in history

    At the end, your group will teach the class what you have discovered.

Process

1.) Choose a Technology  
Pick one of the following:

  • Tanks
  • Airplanes
  • Machine guns
  • Trenches
  • Poison gas
  • Radios/telegraphs

  • Submarines (U‑boats)

    2.) Research Using These Kid‑Friendly Sources

  • Ducksters WWI Technology
  • Britannica Kids: World War I
  • National WWI Museum (student pages)
    (You can add links using “Insert media” on your WebQuest page.)

3.) Take Notes  
Write down:

  • What problem the invention solved
  • How it changed the war
  • Interesting facts

  • Pictures or diagrams (use image URLs)

    4.) Create Your Project  
    Choose one:

  • Poster
  • Google Slides
  • One-page report

  • Short video (1–2 minutes)

    5.) Prepare to Present Practice explaining your technology clearly and confidently.
