Climate Change: Understanding the Challenge and Creating Solutions

Introduction

Imagine that you are a young environmental scientist working with your community. Your community has noticed changes in weather patterns, rising temperatures, stronger storms, and other environmental changes.

Your team has been asked to investigate climate change and determine how it can affect people, animals, and the environment. More importantly, you will explore what individuals and communities can do to reduce its effects.

In this WebQuest, you will become an Environmental Research Team. You will use reliable online resources to investigate climate change, analyze information, and develop a practical solution or awareness campaign for your community.

Essential Question:
How does climate change affect our environment and communities, and what can we do to help address it?

Task

our team will research climate change and create an Environmental Awareness Campaign for your school or community.

Working in groups of 3–4, you will:

  1. Explain what climate change is and identify some of its major causes.
  2. Investigate at least three effects of climate change on people, animals, and the environment.
  3. Research possible solutions or actions that individuals and communities can take.
  4. Evaluate the information you find from reliable online sources.
  5. Create an awareness campaign that communicates your findings and proposed solutions.

Final Product

Your group will create one of the following:

  • An informational poster or infographic
  • A digital presentation
  • A short educational video
  • A social-media-style awareness campaign

Your final product must include:

  • A clear explanation of climate change
  • At least three causes or contributing factors
  • At least three effects
  • At least five practical solutions or actions
  • Supporting facts from reliable sources
  • At least three properly identified sources
  • A clear message encouraging environmental responsibility

Process

Step 1: Form Your Environmental Research Team

Form a group of 3–4 students.

Assign the following roles:

Researcher – Finds and records important information.

Fact Checker – Checks whether information comes from reliable sources.

Content Designer – Organizes the information and designs the final product.

Presenter – Helps prepare and present the group's findings.

Everyone should participate in researching, discussing, and creating the final product.

Step 2: Understand Climate Change

Begin by learning the basic concepts.

Research:

  • What is climate change?
  • What is the difference between weather and climate?
  • What causes climate change?
  • What role do greenhouse gases play?

Use reliable educational and scientific resources such as:

  • NASA Climate Kids
  • NASA Climate Change
  • National Geographic Education
  • United Nations – Climate Action

Record at least five important facts that you learned.

Step 3: Investigate the Effects

Research how climate change affects different parts of the world.

Investigate at least three of the following:

  • Rising temperatures
  • Extreme weather
  • Sea-level rise
  • Melting glaciers and ice
  • Oceans and marine ecosystems
  • Plants and animals
  • Agriculture and food production
  • Human health
  • Communities and livelihoods

For each effect, record:

  1. What is happening?
  2. Why is it happening?
  3. Who or what is affected?
  4. What evidence supports your findings?

Step 4: Investigate Solutions

Now become a team of environmental problem-solvers.

Research actions that can help reduce greenhouse-gas emissions or help communities adapt to climate-related impacts.

Consider:

  • Renewable energy
  • Energy conservation
  • Sustainable transportation
  • Waste reduction and recycling
  • Tree planting and forest protection
  • Sustainable agriculture
  • Water conservation
  • Community preparedness
  • Individual lifestyle changes

Choose at least five practical actions that could be implemented by students, families, schools, or communities.

Step 5: Focus on Your Community

Think about your own school or community.

Discuss these questions:

  • What environmental problems can you observe in our community?
  • Which climate-related issues could affect our community?
  • What actions can students take?
  • What could the school do?
  • How could families participate?
  • Which solution would be realistic and achievable?

Choose three actions that your group believes could realistically be implemented in your school or community.

Step 6: Create Your Environmental Awareness Campaign

Use your research to create your final product.

Your campaign should be:

  • Accurate
  • Clear
  • Creative
  • Easy to understand
  • Supported by evidence
  • Appropriate for your intended audience

Include images, diagrams, charts, or other visual elements when appropriate.

Remember to identify the sources of the information and images you use.

Step 7: Present Your Campaign

Present your campaign to the class.

Your presentation should take approximately 5–7 minutes.

Each member of the group should have a role in the presentation.

Be prepared to answer questions such as:

Evaluation

Your project will be evaluated using the following rubric.
