Story Text
Page 1
Maria lived in a small village with her family. Behind their house was a garden. In the garden, they planted many things. They planted taro, too.
Page 2
One day, Maria's father said, "Let us plant a taro." Maria was happy. She helped her father dig a hole in the soft, brown soil.
Page 3
Father put the small taro plant into the ground. Maria covered it with soil. Then she gave it water. "Grow, little taro, grow!" she said.
Page 4
Every day, Maria went to the garden. She pulled out the weeds. She gave the taro water. The sun shone down. The rain fell soft and warm.
Page 5
Days passed. Weeks passed. The taro plant grew bigger. Its green leaves grew wide and tall. Maria was very happy.

Then one morning, Maria looked at the taro. Her eyes went wide. "Father! Mother!" she called. "Come and see! The taro is very BIG!"

The whole family came. The taro was huge! Even Father could not pull it out alone. So Mother helped. Then Maria helped. Then her little brother helped.

"One, two, three — PULL!" they said. The big taro came out of the ground. Everyone fell down and laughed and laughed.

That night, the family cooked the big taro. It was warm and delicious. They shared the food with their neighbors and friends.
