Introduction
Travel from Latin American Country to Latin American Country, exploring the commonalities and differences in their specific celebration of Three Kings’ Day.
Task
Either with a partner or alone, add to your Spanish portfolio by drawing a picture of one symbol or activity that each country has regarding Three Kings’ Day that is different from the others, with a description of the tradition. Also, add to your Spanish portfolio by drawing one symbol or activity that each country has in common with the other.
Process
1) Create a T-chart with three columns (example is on the board)
2) Read each resource outloud with a partner or quietly by yourself
3) Take your own bullet notes on symbols or activities that each country does within their celebration of three king’s day on your three column T-Chart
4) Compare each column of your T-Chart
5) Circle one symbol or activity that each country does differently when they celebrate Three Kings’ Day
6) Circle one symbol or activity the each country does the same or most similar when they celebrate for Three Kings’ Day that same in all three countries
7) Using google, draw a picture of each of the activities or symbols that you circled, on your OWN Spanish portfolio, and write a brief one or two sentence description underneath that explains when, where and why the tradition happens
8) Make sure to color your individual drawings on your OWN portfolio
Evaluation
After this assignment on your Spanish Portfolio should be:
- Drawing of one symbol or activity from each country, Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, that is different from the other countries (three drawings–two points each)
- Drawing of one symbol or activity that is the same across Spain, Mexico, and Venezuela (one drawing–two points)
- A description under each picture, including when, where, why of symbol or activity (maximum length of description two sentences–one point each)
- Finally the drawings need to be colored (one point for each colored picture)
Note: the drawing is not judged based on how good of a drawing it is, rather did student's take the time to try and create an accurate representation of the symbol or activity on their portfolio. If some effort is shown half credit or if no effort i.e. no drawing then no credit.
Conclusion
After you finish the assignment–Use google classroom or an exit ticket to tell your teacher: one thing you learned about Three Kings’ Day, and if you had to give the assignment what is one thing you would do differently.

This activity is based on Missouri State Standards for Spanish 1 Culture Section "Describe the practices of common cultural activities and holiday celebrations" (World Languages GLES, n.d, p. 5) and "Identify objects and symbols commonly used to represent the culture studied" (World Languages GLES, n.d, p. 6).
I chose Three Kings' Day in particular because when I taught Spanish students didn't understand how vast the differences in Spanish culture and language are, even if they have Hispanic Heritage. Three King's Day is a common celebration across almost all Spanish Countries, but not only does the importance differ in each country but the styles of celebration differ.
In addition, to the cultural appreciation I also wanted to be culturally respective to those students or schools, who may not be able to provide every child with a chrome book to be able to do the lesson (Dr. S.), so although the exploration is on the computer the evaluation is on paper, which means teachers can have students share computers or even print our resources if internet is down.
