Imagine a Situation: Our pets Can Talk Decoding the Secrets Hidden Under Pets's Communication
Subject: Science/Biology
Students Targeting the Topic: Senior High School Students
Topic: Animal Behaviors and Responsible Pet Ownership
Duration: 2-3 Days
Modes of Learning: Inquiry-Based Learning

Ever think about the reasons why your dog wag his tail, or suddenly why your cat runs for hiding and at times why your pet is even afraid to get your touch? The main problem is that they don't use words to speak but communicate through physical postures, noises, facial expressions, and behavior. Sometimes, these messages are wrongly interpreted due to a human reference point.

In this WebQuest, you will be a Pet Behaviour Investigator. You will find out the different ways of communication in dogs and cats and figure out what their body language might convey.

By the end of this activity, you will be able to do this: understand pet behavior and how to deal with it and be better owners for them.
In short, you will be finding out what lies beneath their actions and responding accordingly to the main question of this task:
"If pets can't talk, how can we know what they need?"

Task

The main goal is to make a Pet Care Manual to help pet owners better understand and take care of their four-legged friends.

Your school wants to start up a Pet Awareness Campaign. The group has a task of creating an informational manual for students who own, looking after, or have a pet.

Your work must include the following points:
1. Pet's way of life how dogs and cats use body language, sounds, and movements to communicate.
2. Behaviors decoding find out the meanings of at least five common pet behaviors.
3. Signals identifying provide examples of behavior when an animal is relaxed, playful, scared, stressed, or uncomfortable.
4. Reaction to careful observation explain the ways one should act when a pet displays different behaviors.
5. Pet ownership responsibly the practical guidelines of meeting animal's needs and proper care are to be included.

Create your manual through Canva, Powerpoint, or any appropriate design tool.

Process

You have to go into your world of investigating.

STEP 1: Get to know the animal communication of a Pet and the different animal communications through your own language.

Guide Questions:
* What communication means of dogs and cats do you think exist?
* Why should we care to learn animal communication especially by focusing on body language?
* Are the ways that cats and dogs communicate different?

STEP 2: Discovering a Pet's Behavioural Secrets
Delve into some of the pet's typical behaviors and decode what they might mean.
Take, among others, a pet's tail wagging, a dog baring its teeth or growling at you, a cat's slow blink or a cat that is hidden under the furniture or a cat with their ears pressed to their face etc.

Guide Questions:
* Why are pets doing that?
* Does one gesture mean different things in different situations?
* Why would you prefer to study the whole posture than to concentrate on one limb?

STEP 3: Get in Touch with Their Emotions and Needs
Get to know how animals convey their emotions. Be it a happy, fear, or a stressed animal, they always have some kind of language to show what they're feeling.

Guide Questions:
* Do you know what kind of physical traits can tell you the pet is not feeling well?
* Have you thought of how owners could get their animals a bit of personal space when they need it?
* Have you realized that it's quite harmful when you make a pet to do a thing he/she doesn't want?

STEP 4: Respond with the Right Kind of Support
Look through and figure out different ways how you can support animals with different behaviors that they might show.

Guide Questions:

* What is the best thing to do if a dog is growling?
* What is the best way to go up to and get near an unknown cat?
* What are the situations in which getting a pet checked up by your vet is the right thing to do?

STEP 5: Put Together Your Pet Communication Booklet
Leverage your accumulated information to compile your end output (book/directory).

Your booklet should meet the following standards:
Contain scientifically accurate, fact-checked, and up-to-date content.
Be creative and include images, illustrations, and other design elements to capture the attention.
Be so clearly written that even non-experts could understand the contents.
Cite the online references or sources of information at the back of the booklet or at the bottom of each page to show that the references used are trustworthy.

STEP 6: Make Others Aware of What You Have Found
You will have to do an explanation during your group presentation of the Pet Communication Guidebook, which is actually going to be the product.

Also, don't forget to talk about the different kinds of behavioral patterns you came across, and highlight how pet owners can get closer through understanding and deciphering their pets' languages.

Evaluation

Your work will be graded through the following rubric: the table is self-explanatory.

Criteria:
Accuracy and completeness of information 30
Understanding and interpretation of pet behaviors 25
Creativity and visual presentation 20
Practicality of recommendations 15
Group participation and oral presentation 10
TOTAL 100

Grade Levels:
90–100: Excellent
80–89: Very Good
70–79: Good
60–69: Needs Improvement
Below 60: Poor

Conclusion

Congratulations, Pet Behavior Investigators!

With the help of this WebQuest, not only did you learn about how to interpret your pet's body language, movements, facial expressions, and sounds to determine their wants and comfort levels but also that animals have so many ways to communicate that even without speaking they can tell a lot.

Knowing the signs will make us more responsible and caring pet owners. Animals, for example, may not be able to speak so it is only our duty to pay attention, to understand and to take care of them,

Think about the above questions before you finish the activity:
1. Which pet behavior did you previously misinterpret?
2. Why is it important to understand animals' body language?
3. In what way can you become a more responsible and caring pet owner?

Last thought of the lesson:
"Although animals may not speak our language, their communication always goes on we are just a little slow in learning their ‍‍‍language."
