The Number System

Introduction

Numbers are all around us.  We see and use them in our daily lives whether we realize we are or not.  Your task today, is to identify the types of numbers we see and use in our daily lives and classify them.  Numbers are everywhere, let's take a closer look!

Task

With your partner, on your paper (one per group), jot down three events in which you have used numbers this week (outside of math class).

  • Why were these numbers useful?
  • What did these numbers allow you to do?

You are going to research the different types of numbers in the number system. (Real Numbers, Rational Numbers, Irrational Numbers, Natural (Counting) Numbers, Integers, Whole Numbers)

You will create definitions and provide at least 5 examples for each number type.

Once you have your definitions, you will complete your 'Number System Map' based on the information you gathered.  You will then color your map and answer the conclusion questions on your paper.
