Oceanography Webquest

In this webquest you will be researching a world that cannot be seen. It's a world full of many questions and mysteries. You will have an opportunity to explore, learn, and discover new things. So get ready to discover a whole new world!



 

During this webquest you will be researching, labeling, designing, and creating.

You will create a map of the oceans, a timeline of important oceanographers and their findings, and a slideshow explaining ocean currents and ocean tides.

Follow the steps in the process to complete the assignment.

You will complete each step and place it on the slideshow (except for the map)

Step 1 - use the websites listed below to help you complete the step.  You can do your own research and use your own websites if you wish.

1. Research the major oceans
2. Label the five major oceans on the map provided.
3. Make a chart on the slideshow showing the following information about the oceans
   1. Square kilometers
   2. Greatest Depth in meters
   3. Name of formation at greatest depth
   4. Hemisphere located in

Step 2

1. Research the history of oceanography.
   1. Make a list of 7 significant oceanographers and note their contribution
   2. Make a timeline on construction paper placing these people and events in order (include pictures if possible)          OR       You can create a timeline using google drawings/slides

Step 3

1. Research ocean currents and ocean tides.
   1. Create a slide or slides that include information on how ocean currents occur, their movement, and what effect they have on the atmosphere.
   2. Create a slide explaining how a tide is created.
      1. Use animation if possible
      2. Make sure your backgrounds are not distracting.

Step 4

1. Use the websites to complete the definitions of the seafloor terms.
2. Draw a diagram of the seafloor (on paper or on google drawings) and label the following terms:
   1. Continental shelf
   2. Abyssal plain
   3. Mid-ocean ridge
   4. Continental slope
   5. Seamount
   6. Ocean trench.

Step 5

1. Create 3 questions you have regarding oceans.
   1. Take a moment to explore one or more of the websites listed below to help formulate your questions.
2. Write your questions and answers (use websites to help you find your answers).
3. Find a picture on one of your websites that best represents something in the ocean that you found interesting during your webquest.
4. Create a slide sharing your questions, answers and picture.
