Poetic Elements


Good day Grade 8's welcome to the English class, please watch the introduction video below:



At the end of this Web quest lesson, the learners should be able to :

1. Understand what is poetry.

2. Identify the different parts of poetry.

3. Identify the poetic elements.

4. Define figurative language and it's devices.

5. Compile and create a free verse poem. 


Step 1:

There is a PowerPoint link attached below that you have to access. It defines poetry and a few other poetry terms. With the definitions you are to explain in your own words the following terms.

The terms : structure, line, stanza, form, imagery and metaphor.

I will take note and check if you used your own words. You are allowed to give examples.

Step 2:

After defining the terms, there is a PowerPoint link you need to access that identifies and defines different poetic elements and figurative language. This PowerPoint will assist you when completing the activity in step 4.

Step 3:

Before completing the activity in step 4 you are to read the poem in the activity and listen to the poem audio that is also attached below as a YouTube link.

Step 4:

In this step you are to complete an activity which is provided for you. The link of the activity will be attached below. You are to read the poem attached in the activity and listen to the YouTube poem audio link attached in step 3

Step 5:

In this step you ate to compile and create a free verse poem. It has to be unique and original. It is also important to use  some of the poetic elements that are provided in step 2. A rubric will be provided for you in the Evaluation section.
