Polynomial Arithmetic

Introduction

This webquest will help you to review the definitions of polynomials, how to add, subtract, and multiply polynomials, and how to factor polynomials. You should also review notes and assignments from class.

If you have any questions, please email me at jennifer.byrne@tyngsboroughps.org. I will be checking email on Monday, April 17 and Friday, April 21.

Task

Move through the links in the Process tab to review material for your retake.

The review in the Evaluation must be complete and turned in on Monday, April 24.

Retake tests may be taken on Tuesday, April 25 or Thursday, April 27 after school in MathLab. Your original test grade and retake test grade will be averaged.

Process

Go to Math is Fun-Polynomial (click the link).

***MAKE SURE TO DO THE YOUR TURN PROBLEMS ONLINE****

Make sure you can answer these questions:

1. What is a Polynomial?

2. Give 3 examples of expressions that are not  polynomials.

3. What are monomials, binomials and trinomials?

Go to Math is Fun-Adding/Subtracting Polynomials (click on the link). Make sure to know how to do these things after reading this section:

***MAKE SURE TO WATCH THE ANIMATIONS AND DO THE YOUR TURN PROBLEMS ONLINE***

1. How would you describe like terms?

2. What happens to exponents when you add or subtract polynomials?

3. What are key points you need to remind yourself when you are adding or subtracting polynomials?

Go to Math is Fun- Multiplying Polynomials (click on the link). Take notes and answer the questions below.

1. Solve the problem: 2x(4x+y)

Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sy_2fpY5x7w.

1. Solve the problem (3x+5)(2x-7).

2. Solve the problem (2x+5)(3x^2+5x-3).

4. Factoring Polynomials

There are many different ways to factor: guess and check, slide and divide, box method, and grouping, to name a few. Search "factoring trinomials" in Youtube. Check out different methods to see which one makes the most sense to you.

Next, play some factoring games on-line.
