Practicing with Fables

Introduction

Hi guys, welcome back!

As you already know, this tool can guide us through our process of learning about Fables.

Let's keep in mind our objectifs:

You will be able to infer the parts of a specific story using adjectives to describe the characters and the story by completing a set of activities around the fox and the crow fable.

- You will be able to identify the main characteristics of a story and settings using past tenses with regular and irregular verbs by completing a set of activities around a listening exercise about the lion and the mouse fable.

First of all, lets review over what we worked on during the last classes.

The Best Reasons to Teach Fables in Your Classroom - Keep 'em Thinking

Remember?

We will be dividing the task in two stories developped during two sessions

Task

The Fox and the Crow

The Fox and the Crow (Text, Audio + Video)

What can the image tell you about the story?

Now, let's start by reading the fable individually, you can choose between both resources but we recommend you read them both, in that way you will have a better perspective of the story and more details:

1. https://read.gov/aesop/027.html

2. https://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/FoxCrow.shtml#:~:text=A%20Fox%20once%20saw%20a,feathers%3B%20how%20bright%20your%20eye.https://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/FoxCrow.shtml#:~:text….

How about summarizing the story in the following chart, we will be doing it in groups of three, try to be as specific as possible: (you will be given a piece of cardboard and when you are done, paste it around the classroom)

The focus of the activities will be:

Vocabulary: sly, shy, branch, crow, beautiful, shiny, feather, tricky, beak, smell, fox, beautiful, proud, cheese, tree

Grammar Structures: past simple

Structure of the activities: grouping the sentences, gap filling task with the past tense form of the verbs, labelling the parts of the crow

So, small detailed comprehension check: Are the statements below true or false?

1. The crow sat in the middle of the tree.

2. First, the fox saw the cheese.

3. The fox first talked about the body of the crow.

4. The crow thought he had a beautiful voice.

5. The crow dropped the whole wheel of cheese.

6. The fox waved to the crow as he left.

How about learning a bit about simple past?

Read the story and find the simple past form of the following verbs:

  • Regular verbs: smell, follow, walk, start, bow, listen, want, open, work, trick, ask
  • Regular verbs with special spelling: realize, drop, like, lie
  • Irregular verbs: steal, fly, sit, have, see, say, be, think, fall, eat, get

Try to complete the following chart: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NEWupHeoSIYhmrGxS-lzXWPMdDobs8Szwi7D0zr4RTg/edit?usp=sharing

Read the information, if you have any question, let us know!

Then, Test your knowledge

Then why don't we link the last grammar mini lesson to adjectifs...

Read the following statements and try to find the adjectif that fits the situation:

1) The fox wasn’t … . He lied to the crow.

2) The fox said that the crow was … . He had no mistakes.

3) The crow was … . He didn’t want to show his voice. He felt uncomfortable.

4) The fox was … . He was very clever and he had a great idea.

5) The fox was … of himself. He thought that he was the best.

6) The crow was … . He felt bad and he wasn’t happy at all.

List the adjectifs you found in your notebook and try to find its opposite one, share them with the partner besides you and then share them with the class...

Guys...finally...

What would you say if you were in the place of the crow? How would you feel?

How else would you get the cheese, can you come up with alternatives? We are sharing them with the class...

Process

Before getting to work on our own fable, we need to keep looking at the structure of the fable itself with another example:

The Lion and the Mouse

The Lion and the Mouse | Aesop's Fables Series | ABCmouse.com - YouTube

What can the image tell you about the story?

First of all, go to the Padlet and answer the following questions. We will be discussing them!

  • Do you know the story about the lion and the mouse?

  • What do lions and mice look like? Can you tell if there are evident differences?

  • What is mercy? Have you ever had mercy?

https://padlet.com/lauribj2020/the-lion-and-the-mouse-first-approach-f7wzomjkoq1wzfra

Now, let's start by listening to the fable individually: You can find two different sources.

Quick compehension CHECK...

Share the answers to the following questions with your partners, be ready to share them with the whole class:

  • Why did Lion wake up? ...
  • When Mouse said he would repay Lion, what did Lion do? ...
  • What was Lion stuck in? ...
  • How did Mouse repay Lion? ...
  • What is the BEST moral or lesson you learned from the story? ...
  • How do you think Lion felt when he was inside the net? ...
  • Who are the main characters? ...

Find out how much you remember about past tenses...

Now, go and check part 2 of the Simple Past Guide Here

In a sheet, write your answers and hand them to the teacher. This does not take more than 15 minutes!

Finally, try to correct the second activity. Your can find it in the same guide. (Simple Past Guide - Activity 2)

Register your answers HERE with your name on them.

We will share the answers in class

This will be all for today, you're done.

Evaluation

The WebQuest proposes a set of activities around two different fables and the main focus is on comprehension and grammar activities. They will be assessed trough participation, individual and team work (see the rubric bellow).

All the activities are part of the preparation to build your own fable, try to give your best! Remember you are being assessed through the whole process with the respective feedback.
