Pythagorean Theorem

Introduction

In this WebQuest, students will watch, learn, and explore all there is to know about Pythagorean's Theorem and how to apply it to solve real world math problems. Check out the following video of people NOT using Pythagorean's theorem correctly!

Task

Students will be creating a Google Slide deck outlining the steps to solving the Pythagorean Theorem using the standard formula as well as the formula when the hypotenuse is given and 1 side length is missing. Students will work in groups of 2-3 and collaborate by distributing the workload appropriately. All students will need access to an electronic device and access to Google Slides and Google Classroom where the work will be shared.

Process

Each student will contribute to the slide deck by adding in information on the steps to solving a Pythagorean Theorem problem as well as any vocabulary and graphics that will add to the overall creativity of the assignment. Transitions and music may be used appropriately. The slide deck must include all of the following...

  • Introduction slide with all participants named
  • All academic language defined
  • Step-by-step instructions on Pythagorean's Theorem to find the hypotenuse
  • Step-by-step instructions on Pythagorean's Theorem to find a side length
  • 1 video found on Youtube that visually shows the Pythagorean Theorem being used
  • 1 real world example of the Pythagorean Theorem NOT worked out for the class to solve
Evaluation
Category Proficient (3 pts) Developing (2 pts) Needs Improvement (1 pt)
Slides Slides are placed appropriately and contain all required slides.  Slides contain correct information but are not paced correctly using a variety of slides. Slides are missing and content is lacking
Grammar Correct grammar throughout the presentation. A few grammar errors Too many grammatical errors
Correct Mathematics All work and steps are correct and is shown on a slide. Missing or incorrect work shown No work shown
Creativity Presentation contains photos, a variety of colors and a consistent design. At least one phone and some design Lacking photos and consistent designs
Conclusion

All groups will have the opportunity to present their slide deck to the class. As each group presents, students not presenting will have an opportunity to solve the problem presented in the slide deck. A running list of the problems and their answers will be collected at the conclusion of the assignment for a participation grade.

Conclusion

Students will have had time to explore the concept of Pythagoreans Theorem and use a Google Slides deck to present their found information and material to their peers. A deeper understanding of how to use the formula properly will prepare students for real life examples of how and when to use Pythagorean's Theorem.
