Introduction
Welcome to Reading Rocks! An Alphabet Adventure!
Hello, Reading Rock Stars! Are you ready to become alphabet detectives?
Today we are going on an exciting adventure to discover letters, listen to their sounds, and find pictures of things that begin with those sounds.
We will play games, explore learning websites, and work with friends to create our very own digital alphabet presentation!
Guiding Questions
- How can we recognize uppercase and lowercase letters?
- What sounds do letters make?
- How can we find pictures and words that begin with the same sound?
- How can we work together to teach others about letters?
Learning Objectives
Students will identify selected uppercase and lowercase letters, produce common consonant sounds, match pictures to beginning sounds, and contribute to a group digital alphabet presentation.
Bloom's Taxonomy: Remember, Understand, Apply, Analyze, and Create.
Task
Our Mission: Become Alphabet Superstars!
Calling all Reading Rock Stars!
Our kindergarten classroom needs your help creating a special digital alphabet book to teach other children about letters and sounds.
You and your teammates will become Alphabet Detectives and explore fun educational websites to learn about letters.
Your group project: Create a colorful digital alphabet presentation using Canva.
Your presentation must include:
- Five uppercase and five matching lowercase letters.
- One picture for each letter.
- A word that begins with each letter's most common sound.
- An opportunity for each group member to explain or demonstrate a letter sound.
- Colorful pictures and creative designs.
For example:
A a — Apple
B b — Ball
C c — Cat
At the end of our adventure, each group will share its presentation with the class.
Our goal is to help our classmates become stronger readers while practicing teamwork, creativity, communication, and technology skills.
Are you ready to rock the alphabet?
Process
Let's Begin Our Alphabet Adventure!
Follow these steps.
Step 1: Meet Your Alphabet Team
Your teacher will place you into groups of three or four students.
Each student will have a special job:
- Letter Detective: Identifies uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Sound Superstar: Practices the beginning sounds of words.
- Picture Finder: Helps select pictures that match the letters.
- Technology Helper: Helps the group create its digital presentation with teacher assistance.
In groups of three, students may share responsibilities.
Step 2: Explore Letters and Sounds
With your teacher's help, visit the following educational websites.
Activity 1: Alphabet Learning
Starfall ABCs
https://www.starfall.com/h/abcs/
Explore letters, listen to their sounds, and practice identifying uppercase and lowercase letters.
Activity 2: Letter and Sound Practice
PBS KIDS Games
https://pbskids.org/games/
With your teacher, choose an age-appropriate alphabet or reading game. Practice recognizing letters and listening for sounds.
Activity 3: Reading Rocks Kahoot Challenge
https://create.kahoot.it/share/reading-rocks/3055d987-24c6-4306-8d08-11ab9abb635d
Play the Reading Rocks Kahoot with your classmates. Listen carefully, identify letters, and choose the correct beginning sounds.
Step 3: Become Beginning-Sound Detectives
Your teacher will assign five letters to your group.
For each letter:
- Say the letter's name.
- Find its uppercase and lowercase forms.
- Practice the letter's most common sound.
- Think of a familiar word that begins with that sound.
- Choose a picture representing the word.
Your teacher will help you record your answers.
Step 4: Work Together Using Technology
Your teacher will create a shared Google Slides presentation or a teacher-managed shared document.
Each group will have its own section.
With adult guidance, group members will add their assigned letters, pictures, and beginning-sound words.
Students can contribute at different times during classroom learning centers. The teacher will review contributions and leave simple feedback or picture prompts for the group.
This allows students to collaborate asynchronously while practicing responsible digital citizenship. The teacher will manage sharing permissions and will not require children to use personal accounts or publicly share their information.
Step 5: Create Your Alphabet Presentation
With your teacher's assistance, visit Canva:
Use a teacher-managed Canva presentation to create five colorful alphabet slides.
Each slide must include:
- An uppercase letter.
- A matching lowercase letter.
- A picture.
- A beginning-sound word.
Every student must contribute to the group project.
Step 6: Present Your Alphabet Adventure
Each group will present its digital alphabet slides to the class.
Students will:
- Identify their letters.
- Say the beginning sounds.
- Explain the matching pictures.
- Celebrate their classmates' work.
Step 7: Reflect on Your Learning
With your teacher, answer these questions:
- What new letters did you learn?
- Which beginning sound was your favorite?
- How did you help your group?
- What did you enjoy about using technology?
Congratulations! You are becoming Reading Rock Stars!
