Running Form

Introduction

Running is an aerobic exercise, sport, and recreational activity. Running is performed when someone rapidly moves their feet while their arms swing at the side. In this Webquest I will focus on running form.

Task

My task is to educate the reader on proper running technique and form.

Process

There are 6 main body parts to focus on for proper running form:

  • The head
  • The shoulders
  • The arms
  • The torso
  • The legs
  • The feet

We will cover each one in this WebQuest.

1. The head

You may think that your head has nothing to do with running, but it does! It's important to keep your head up and not facing downwards. Looking forward helps you with your posture and aligns your neck with back and shoulders.

2. The shoulders

The shoulders should always be upright, open, and relaxed.

3. The arms

While running, your arms should swing at your sides. They should be relaxed. Swing your arms in coordination with the movement of your legs.

4. The torso

The torso and spine should be straight, never slouched. This is especially important because your power and centre of gravity are in the torso.

5. The legs

The legs should move opposite each other in long, coordinated strides.

6. The feet

When running, try to land on the balls of your feet. Landing on the heels or toes could cause injury.

Bringing it all together

Bring all of these techniques together to run with proper form and coordinated strides. Here's what it should look like:

Common Mistakes/Tips

  1. Make sure that you maintain a good posture throughout your running. Slouching can cause back strain and sometimes injury.
  2. If you are breathing through your nose while running, you will lose oxygen and start to slow down. Always breath through your mouth with large, deep breaths.
  3. Try not to clench your fists, as this can cause your whole body to tense.
  4. Don't over stride. This causes you to land on your heels instead of the balls of your feet, which is not good for them.
  5. Don't let your arms go all over the place! Keep them relaxed, but in control at your side.
Conclusion

There are many careers/jobs that involve running, like a track and field coach, gym teacher, and dog runner.  For those who want to compete, many options are available to them, like marathons, track and field, cross country, and special runs for fundraising.

Running is a wonderful way to get exercise, and it's fun to compete in too. By maintaining a good running form, you can improve your overall speed and endurance and become a better runner.
