Smart Shopper: Exploring Percentages in Real Life

Introduction

Imagine that your family gives you a budget of ₱5,000 for a special shopping trip. You need to buy several important items, but you also see many advertisements offering discounts and special deals.

How can you decide which products are worth buying? How can you determine how much money you are really saving? How can percentages help you make better decisions?

In this WebQuest, you will become a Smart Shopper. You will investigate real-life prices, discounts, and percentage changes using information from the Internet. You will work with your group to analyze the information and create a practical shopping plan.

Your goal is not simply to calculate percentages. You will use mathematics to make a real-life decision.

Task

Working in groups of 3–5 students, you will create a Smart Shopping Plan using a budget of ₱5,000.

Your final product must contain:

  1. At least five products that your group would like to purchase.
  2. The original price of each product.
  3. At least one discount or percentage change for each product.
  4. The amount of discount or increase.
  5. The final price after applying the percentage.
  6. The total amount spent.
  7. The amount of money saved, if applicable.
  8. A short explanation of why your group selected those products.

Your final output may be presented as a digital poster, infographic, PowerPoint presentation, or Google Slides presentation.

At the end, your group will answer this question:

How can understanding percentages help people make better decisions when shopping and managing money?

Process

Step 1 – Organize Your Group

Form a group of 3–5 members and assign responsibilities.

Suggested roles:

  • Researcher – searches for product information and prices.
  • Calculator – checks the percentage computations.
  • Recorder – organizes the information in a table.
  • Designer – prepares the final presentation.
  • Presenter – explains the group's findings.

Members should still work together and check one another's work.

Step 2 – Review Percentage Concepts

Before starting the investigation, review the following:

  • Percentage
  • Rate
  • Base
  • Percentage increase
  • Percentage decrease
  • Discount

Make sure that everyone in the group understands how percentage calculations are performed.

Step 3 – Search for Real-Life Information

Use the Internet to find products and prices from reliable websites.

Look for examples of:

  • Sale prices
  • Discounts
  • Price increases
  • Promotional offers
  • Household expenses

Record the source of your information.

Step 4 – Select Your Products

Choose at least five products that your fictional family might reasonably purchase.

Examples include:

  • School supplies
  • Clothing
  • Food
  • Appliances
  • Household products
  • Electronic accessories

Your total budget is ₱5,000, so you need to make practical choices.

Step 5 – Calculate the Percentages

For every selected product, determine:

Original Price × Discount Rate = Discount Amount

Then:

Original Price − Discount Amount = Sale Price

Show your complete solution.

Step 6 – Compare Your Choices

Discuss the following questions:

  • Which product gives the biggest savings?
  • Which product has the highest percentage discount?
  • Did the biggest discount always result in the biggest peso savings?
  • Did your group stay within the ₱5,000 budget?
  • Which purchases were necessary and which were optional?

Step 7 – Prepare Your Smart Shopping Plan

Organize your findings in a table such as:

Product Original Price Discount Discount Amount Final Price
Product 1 ₱___ ___% ₱___ ₱___
Product 2 ₱___ ___% ₱___ ₱___
Product 3 ₱___ ___% ₱___ ₱___
Product 4 ₱___ ___% ₱___ ₱___
Product 5 ₱___ ___% ₱___ ₱___

Add your recommendations and explanations.

Step 8 – Present Your Findings

Present your Smart Shopping Plan to the class.

Your group should explain:

  • How you calculated the percentages
  • How you decided which products to buy
  • How much money you spent
  • How much money you saved
  • Why your choices were practical

Conclusion

You have completed the Smart Shopper WebQuest!

Through this activity, you discovered that percentages are not only mathematical concepts found in textbooks. They are useful in everyday life when people compare prices, calculate discounts, manage budgets, and make financial decisions.

Take a moment to reflect:

What did I learn about percentages from this activity?

How can I use percentage skills in my daily life?

What was the most challenging part of the activity?

How did working with my group help me learn?

How will I use what I learned the next time I shop or manage money?

The purpose of this WebQuest is to help students investigate, analyze information, solve problems, and apply mathematics to an authentic situation, rather than simply memorize procedures. This follows the WebQuest format in your assignment: Introduction, Task, Process, Resources, Evaluation, and Conclusion.
