Soil Erosion

Introduction

Learning objective about Soil Erosion.

The learnings for Soil Erosion are designed to help students  understand the concept,  causes, and consequences of Soil Erosion. Here are the key objectives.

.Define Soil Erosion.: Students will learn the term and its meaning in relation to the natural process of Soil movement.

.  Identify agents  of Soil erosion: Students will recognize the various  agents that contribute to Soil, such as wind ,water  and gravity.

. Assess consequences of Soil Erosion: Students will evathe impact of soil Erosion on the environment, agriculture, and community.  These objectives aim to equip  students with the knowledge and skills necessary to recognise and address the challenges posed by Soil.

Task

*Task 1: What is Soil Erosion?*
Research and answer:
- Define soil erosion in your own words.
- What is the difference between natural erosion and accelerated erosion caused by humans?

*Task 2: Causes of Soil Erosion*
Find the 5 main causes:
1.  *Water* - Heavy rainfall and runoff washes topsoil away
2.  *Wind* - Strong winds blow loose soil, especially in dry areas
3.  *Deforestation* - Cutting down trees removes roots that hold soil
4.  *Overgrazing* - Too many animals eat all vegetation cover
5.  *Human Activities* - Farming on steep slopes, mining, construction

_Namibia example:_ Think about how deforestation and overgrazing affect soil in Khomas Region.

*Task 3: Types of Soil Erosion*
Explain these 4 types with a small drawing for each:
- Sheet erosion
- Rill erosion
- Gully erosion
- Wind erosion

*Task 4: Effects / Consequences*
What happens when we lose topsoil?
- Loss of fertile land → low crop yields → food insecurity
- Desertification
- Water pollution (soil in rivers/dams)
- Flooding increases

*Task 5: Solutions - How Can We Prevent It?*
Research and list at least 6 prevention methods:
1. Planting trees / Afforestation
2. Cover cropping
3. Contour ploughing (ploughing along the contour)
4. Terracing on steep slopes
5. Building windbreaks
6. Controlled grazing / Crop rotation

*Final Product - Choose ONE:*
- A 1-page poster with pictures
- A 5-slide PowerPoint
- A 300-word report for your class

*Conclusion Question for Reflection:*
Why should we in Namibia care about soil erosion, and what is ONE thing you personally can do to help protect the soil?

Process

> *Follow these steps to complete your investigation:*

*Step 1: Form Groups*

Work in groups of 3-4. Assign roles: Researcher, Note-taker, Artist/Designer, Presenter.

*Step 2: Research (30 minutes)*

Use the links provided in the RESOURCES section to find information about:

1. Definition of soil erosion

2. Causes

3. Types

4. Effects

5. Prevention methods

_Write short notes. Don't copy-paste everything._

*Step 3: Organize Your Information*

Sort your notes into the 5 headings from the TASK. Use a table or mind map.

*Step 4: Create Your Product*

Use your notes to create your poster / PowerPoint / report.

- Include at least 3 pictures/diagrams

- Include one Namibian example

- Add your sources at the bottom

*Step 5: Present and Reflect*

- Each group presents for 3-5 minutes

- Answer the conclusion question: "Why should Namibians care about soil erosion?"

*Step 6: Submit*

Submit your final product to your teacher by and complete the self-assessment checklist.[date]

#### Quick Formula to Remember for ANY WebQuest Process:

1. *How to start* - groups, roles

2. *What to research* - clear steps

3. *How to organize* - notes, table

4. *What to create* - poster/report

5. *How to finish* - present & submit

Evaluation

 EVALUATION

*How you will be assessed:*

Your final product (poster / PowerPoint / report) will be marked out of *30 marks* using this rubric:

Criteria Excellent (5) Good (3-4) Needs Work (1-2)

**Content - Definition & Types** Clear definition + all 4 types explained correctly Definition ok, 2-3 types explained Definition missing or types unclear

**Causes & Effects** 5 causes + 4 effects listed with examples 3-4 causes/effects listed Only 1-2 listed

**Solutions / Prevention** 6+ prevention methods with explanation 3-5 methods listed Less than 3 methods

**Namibian Example** Strong local example (e.g., Khomas, overgrazing) included Mentioned but not explained No local example

**Presentation & Creativity** Very neat, 3+ pictures, well organized, no spelling errors Neat, 1-2 pictures, some errors Not neat, no pictures, many errors

**Teamwork & Sources** All members participated, sources listed Most participated, sources listed One person did all work, no sources

*Total: /30 marks*

*Mark Conversion:*

- 24-30 = Excellent

- 18-23 = Very Good

- 12-17 = Satisfactory

- Below 12 = Needs Improvement

*Self-Check Questions Before You Submit:*

1. Did we answer all 5 tasks?

2. Did we include pictures?

3. Did we include a Namibian example?

4. Did we list our sources?

5. Did we check spelling?

Conclusion

CONCLUSION

Congratulations! You have completed your investigation on soil erosion. 👏

You have learned that soil erosion is not just about soil being washed or blown away — it is a serious threat to our food, our environment, and our future, especially here in Namibia where our land is dry and vulnerable.

You discovered the main causes such as deforestation, overgrazing, water and wind, the different types like sheet, rill and gully erosion, and most importantly, how we can prevent it through planting trees, contour ploughing, terracing and controlled grazing.

Remember: *It takes hundreds of years to form topsoil, but only minutes to lose it.* Protecting soil is protecting life.

*Final thought for you:*

Now that you are an Environmental Investigator, what is ONE small action you will take in your home, school or community to help stop soil erosion?

Thank you for taking care of our land! 🌱
