Sport and Success

Introduction

Imagine that you are part of a team of professional sports coaches. A young athlete has an important competition in three months. The athlete is talented and motivated, but does not have a clear training or healthy lifestyle plan.

Your team has been asked to help this athlete prepare for the competition.

What does it really take to become a successful athlete?

In this WebQuest, you will investigate how successful athletes train, recover, and maintain healthy lifestyles. You will use information from different online sources to create a plan that can help your athlete achieve their goal.

Task

Your mission is to create a complete “Road to Success” plan for a young athlete.

Working in small groups, you will:

  1. Choose a sport and create your athlete's profile.
  2. Investigate how successful athletes train.
  3. Learn about the main principles of training.
  4. Research healthy habits such as sleep, nutrition, hydration, and recovery.
  5. Investigate a successful athlete.
  6. Use the information from different websites to make recommendations.
  7. Make predictions using the First Conditional.
  8. Discuss hypothetical situations using the Second Conditional.
  9. Create a final Road to Success plan.
  10. Present your plan to the class.

Your final project should answer the following question: What should your athlete do to become more successful?

Process

Step 1 – Meet Your Athlete

Create your young athlete's profile.

Then investigate how athletes train. Use the Ryan Murphy video and the BBC Bitesize Principles of Training resource.

Article: Principles of training

Identify:

  • training activities
  • training principles
  • recovery strategies
  • possible areas for improvement

Task Sheet 1: Training Investigation

Students complete the worksheet while watching the video and reading the BBC resource.

Step 2 – Discover the Secrets of Success

Use the websites in the Resources section to investigate a successful athlete and healthy habits.

Find information about:

  • training
  • sleep
  • nutrition
  • hydration
  • recovery
  • motivation and success

Task Sheet 2: Athlete Research

Record the information they find and identify recommendations that could help your athlete.

Step 3 – Make Predictions

Use your research to make recommendations.

First, practise the First Conditional:

If the athlete trains regularly, they will improve their performance.

If the athlete gets enough sleep, they will recover faster.

Then practise the Second Conditional:

If the athlete had more time, they would train more.

If I were the coach, I would change the training plan.

Complete two online activities:

Step 4 – Create Your Road to Success

Use your research and completed activities to create the final project.

Your Road to Success must include:

  • Athlete profile
  • Training plan
  • Healthy lifestyle recommendations
  • Training principles
  • At least 3 First Conditional sentences
  • At least 3 Second Conditional sentences
  • Final recommendations

Create your project using Canva or Google Slides and present it to the class.
