Time Categories

Introduction

Hello First Graders!

Today, you will be learning about the different time categories and reviewing the 12 months.

There are three different types; past, present and future. There are also 12 months in one year. Some of you may know most of the months, but at the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to name all the months and define the three different time categories.

Task

At the end of this WebQuest, you will be able to distinguish the differences between past, present and future.

You will also create a story that happened in the past, what is going on in the present and what you will be doing in the future. I want you to be creative with these stories! You can write about anything you would like, but please make sure you include the past, present and the future.

As a bonus, I would also like you to name all the months that make up the year and I will assign you a partner and you will ask them their birthday month and tell me if their birthday month was in the past, present or in the future!

In this next process, you will read about the different time categories and get a refresher on the months of the year!

If you have any questions, please ask!

Process

As stated in the beginning, there are three different time categories; past, present and future.

The past is anything that has already happened. The past can mean long ago or not so long ago, like yesterday! You were a kindergartener in the past!

The present is right now. You are a first grader who is learning about time categories, right now!

The future is anything that has not happened yet. This could be a long time from now, like when you will be an adult or not so long from now, like tomorrow. Santa will be coming in the future to bring presents to those who have been good!

Now, there are 12 months in a year. Last year in kindergarten, you learned all the names. All of you know when your birthday is and you also know that my birthday is in the month of June!

Here is a video I want you to watch to refresh your memory!

Evaluation

At the end of the lesson, I will be reading your stories and seeing if you fully understand the concept of time categories and seeing if you know when your partner's birth month is!

After I am done evaluating your assignments, I will be handing them back to you so you can put them in your take home folder and show your family! If I see that some students are struggling, I will be more than happy to meet with those friends and go over this lesson again! Lastly, I will be looking for a student who is working hard during this lesson and staying on task. Once I select this student, there will be star of the week!

Conclusion

In conclusion, you will have learned the three time categories and your partner's birth month! My partner was Ms. Smith! Her birth month is also in June, meaning her birthday was in the past because it already happened!

You also learned how to write three different stories using past, present and the future!

Now when you are at home talking to your parents or even your grandparents, you can ask them about their past!

I was inspired by Lori McDonald's lesson plan on past, present and future.

Attached below is my abbreviated lesson plan:

UNIT: Time

GRADE LEVEL: First Grade

TOPIC: Understanding time can be divided into categories

THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION:  How can we talk about different time frames in our classroom?

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: First graders beginning to understand how families lived long ago and how they live in other cultures. We are going to help develop their understanding of time categories and what those categories are!

CONTENT STANDARDS ADDRESSED BY PROJECT Students will understand time can be divided into categories (e.g., months of the year, past, present, and future).

STUDENT TECHNOLOGY STANDARD ADDRESSED BY PROJECT: Students will articulate and set personal learning goals, develop strategies leveraging technology and achieve them and reflect on the learning process itself to improve learning outcomes.

LEARNING/INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES: 1. Students will be able to identity the different time categories

2. Students will create a story about each time category

3. Students can name the 12 months

RUBRIC – This is an example listed below of what criteria one would use for grading the student on the learning activity (the criteria should relate directly back to the student objectives and what rating is appropriate for the student.

Teacher Page

This was my first WebQuest I have created. I know there is a lot of room for improvement! But I love making assignments and lessons for my first graders that requires technology because they can work on the material by themselves and then we can come together as a class and share each others answers.
