Introduction

What is a noun?

  • A noun is a word that functions as the name of a specific object or set of objects, such as living creatures,places, actions, qualities, states of existence, or ideas.All nouns can be classified into two groups of nouns: common or proper.

Naming People

Examples: John, Hannah, Romeo, Maris, Billy Joel and so on.

 

Naming Places

Examples: Philippines, South Korea, Maldives, Paris and so on.

 

Naming Things

Examples:  Car, Umbrella, Table, Chair, Ball and so on.

 

Naming Animals

Examples: Dog Rabbit, Peacock, Chicken, and so on.

 

Naming Feeling/Qualities/Ideas

Examples: Sorrow, Beauty, Strength, Sadness, Joy and so on.

 

Example Sentences

  1. I live in Philippines.
  2. Maris is my sister.
  3. I love to play with my cat.
  4. The name of this dog is Gasper.
Task

Identify the Nouns in the sentence. Underline the word in each sentence that modifies a Noun.

Types of Nouns

There are several types of nouns, and there can be an overlap across the categories. For example, there are common and proper nouns, and concrete and abstract nouns, yet some nouns are both concrete and common, or concrete and proper. It will become clear as you read on.

Proper Noun:

A proper noun is a name which refers only to as person, place, or thing and there is no common name for it. In written English, a proper noun always begins with capital letters.

Examples:

  • Katherine loved spending time with her Aunt Lara in Paris.
  • John and Carlo are two important carmakers.

Common Noun:

A common noun is a name for something which is common for many things, person, or places. It encompasses a particular type of things, person, or places.

Examples:

  • Reign loves the weekends in the country.
  • The plate fell and broke.

Abstract Noun:

An abstract noun is a word for something that cannot be seen but is there. It has no physical existence.  Generally, it refers to ideas, qualities, and conditions.

Examples:

  • Truthfulness is a virtue that is rare nowadays.
  • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Concrete Noun:

A concrete noun is the exact opposite of abstract noun It refers to the things we see and have physical existence.

Examples:

  • My dog, Gasper, jumped in the air and caught the ball!
  • Can you smell the soup, Prince?

Countable Noun:

The nouns that can be counted are called countable nouns .

 Examples:

  • There are three cats in the street.
  • Mary has four pairs of shoes.

Uncountable Nouns:

The nouns that cannot be counted are called non-countable nouns .

Examples:

  • Love is in the air.
  • The four elements are air, earth, fire and water.

Collective Noun:

A collective noun is a word for a group of things,people, or animals, etc.

Examples:

  • The class threw confetti when it was over.
  • Leslie buys the team some water.

As mentioned above, when we talk of categories of nouns, some nouns can be described as being in more than one category. Some nouns are concrete and countable, for example, such as raindrops and wedding rings, while some are proper and uncountable, such as the Atlantic Ocean and Alaska.

Evaluation

Underline the nouns in the following sentences and write down on the underline before each number ifthey are common, proper, collective, concrete, collective or abstract.

  • abstract noun is a word for something that cannot be seen but is there. It has no physical existence. Generally, it refers to ideas, qualities, and conditions. Example : Truth, lies, happiness, sorrow, time,friendship, humor, patriotism, etc.

Collective nouns

  • A collective noun is a word for a group of things,people, or animals, etc. Example: family, team, jury, cattle, etc.

Count and mass nouns

  • The nouns that can be counted are called countable nouns. Example : Chair, table, bat, ball, etc. The nouns that cannot be counted are called non-countable nouns.Example: Water, sugar, oil, salt, etc.
