Understanding Ocean Tides

Introduction

Have you ever noticed that the sea level changes every day—sometimes the water comes closer to the shore, and sometimes it moves far away? This natural movement is called ocean tides. In this WebQuest, you will explore how and why tides happen, and how they affect people, animals, and the environment. You will become a “marine science explorer” discovering real-world ocean patterns using online resources.

Task

Your goal is to create a “Tide Awareness Poster” or Digital Presentation that explains:

  • What ocean tides are
  • What causes high tide and low tide
  • The role of the moon and sun in tides
  • How tides affect human activities (fishing, boating, coastal living)

Your final product should be clear, creative, and informative. You will present it to the class as if you are a marine scientist.

Process

Follow these steps:

  1. Read and watch the provided online resources about ocean tides.
  2. Take notes on key ideas (definition, causes, effects).
  3. Make a simple diagram showing how tides work (moon–earth–sun relationship).
  4. Choose your final output: poster or slideshow.
  5. Organize your ideas into sections:
    • What are tides?
    • Why do tides happen?
    • Effects of tides
  6. Add images, diagrams, or examples.
  7. Review your work and prepare a short presentation (2–3 minutes).

Conclusion

Great job, Marine Explorer! Through this WebQuest, you have learned how ocean tides work and why they are important to Earth. You also practiced researching, organizing information, and presenting your ideas creatively. Understanding tides helps us appreciate how the moon and ocean are connected. Keep exploring the wonders of Earth’s natural systems!
