Introduction
Unit 2 coursebook “Insight” Pre-intermediate Student’s Book and Workbook by Wildam J. and Beddall F. 2014 – Oxford University Press.
What’s behind your name?
We are all given a name sometimes before we are given birth. We recognize that the name is ours and we go through our lives without knowing what’s behind it. Before reading the text "What’s in a name " on page 22 and 23 respectively, watch the following video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXa_-idMJb8 . Pay attention and take into account that the name of the video has a meaning and a story as well , and your name also has one. Focus on the story of the video and anwer the questions:
-
Do you like your name? What are your opinions on it? Who named you that way?
-
Have you ever been interested in knowing where your name comes from, or what is its meaning?
Once you finish sharing your ideas with your classmates, read the text and reflect on these questions:
-
Do you think names tell us a story or give us clues about places?
-
Do you know any aboriginal name of a place in your hometown?
-
Is there any originary name that you like? Do you know what’s its meaning?
Task
The task will be divided into three parts.
1. In groups of four students, do a research about the following items: the origin, history and meaning of the name of one place in our province.
2. Once you make the research of your place, create a presentation using the context below. Get ready to role-play. Use your imagination and be creative.
Context: you are a team of tourist guides presenting a place in your province. You are going to expose about these aspects: location, meaning of the name, the origin or the story behind that name, and an interesting fact about the place chosen.
