Introduction

Drug abuse or substance abuse refers to the use of certain chemicals for the purpose of creating pleasureable effects on the brain. There are over 190 million drug users around the world and the problem has been increasing at alarming rates, especially among young adults under the age of 30.

Drugs are chemicals that affect the body and brain. Different drugs can have different effects. Some effects of drugs include health consequences that are long-lasting and permanent. They can even continue after a person has stopped taking the substance.

Conclusion

Using drugs can affect the lives of those caught up it in ways they might not expect. It can affect health, relationship, jobs and education. Recognising whether you or someone close to you has a problem with drugs is an important first step seeking help and treatment. Risks associated with using drugs include physical and mental health problems. People from all walks of life take illicit drugs and the type use can depend on their socioeconomi status including their cultural background.
