The Falling Leaves Project

Introduction

Leaves. Each and every one of them are unique. Each one tells a story. But, each and every leaf belongs to a special kind of tree. It is your job to be able to find these leaves and be able to identify them.

Task

Students will be broken up into groups of 4-5 people. We will give them a paper on different kinds of leaves and trees and have them match them up. They will be able to go on the internet to be able to do this first part of the activity. After they have completed that part, they will be instructed to go outside with their group and find certain kinds of leaves and they will actually have to find the different trees that go with that leaf. After that, they will be given a group test to test their knowledge on the different types of leaves and trees. They will not be able to get online or anything. This is just to test their knowledge on what they have learned.

Process

Step 1: Students will be broken up into groups of 4-5 people

Step 2: You will be given a worksheet on different types of trees and then have to match the leaves that will go with them.

Step 3: Now your group will be sent outside and each memberof the group will have to find a different kind of leaf.

Step 4: Once everyone has their leaves, your group will come back inside and use the given resources to identify their leaves. The given resources will be found on https://www.arborday.org/trees/whattree/

Step 5: You will be given a group test on the kinds of trees you should have learned. You should be able to identify them wihout the use of any database at this point.

This activity allows students to work together in groups and forms a bonding activity.

This also helps them learn about different types of leaves and gives the students an idea of where they come from.

It also allows the stuents to learn how to look up thigns they are supposed to on the internet. They look up the information which will help them later on in middle school and beyond. People use the internet almost every single day of their lives and with this activity, the students will see why... to look up important information.

This also allows the students to be able to go outside and get some fresh air. Kids need the air and just to take in the beauty of nature and all of its surroundings! Nature is a beautiful thing, and with this activity, they will be able to see that for themselves.
