Researching Famous Photographers
Many of the famous photographs throughout history were taken by individuals with a unique vision and way of capturing their subjects on film. These photos are often timeless and reflect the photographers unique personality. Photographers such as Ansel Adams built his career around fine art photography and in his later years used his fame to become an activist for specific world causes. Exploring the background of some of the worlds most well-known photographers can provide insight into your work.
Essential Question: How can researching the background and work of some of the worlds most well-known photographers provide insight and creativity into our own photography techniques and photos?
Task
In order to be successful with this assignment there are several tasks you must complete.
- First start researching some famous photographers and their work. You can pick from the list below or pick your own.
- Narrow your chooses down to 3 photographers and then pick the one photographer you are most interested in.
- Using the "Source Notes Page" start to fill

Critical Analysis Research Paper Instructions
Source Notes Page
- Using the source note page collect, label, and paraphrase information on a specific photograph by a specific photographer.
- Organize your collected info into a final paper.
- Open a new Word Document to Type in.
- At the top right corner: Name, Date, Block
- In the Top/Center of the page title it: Critical Analysis Research Paper
Write your 6 paragraphs using the paraphrased notes form your source notes pages:
For Each Paragraph
R- Restate the Main Question, A- Answer that Question, V- Use our Vocab, E- Cite Evidence
Paragraph 1:
Introduction- Who is your chosen artist? What is their general biography?
Paragraph 2:
Description- What does your specific photograph look like?
Paragraph 3:
Analysis- How did the artist use composition, textures, colors, patterns and balance to express that specific moment?
Paragraph 4:
Interpretation- What is the theme of this specific photograph? What connection can you make to it?
Paragraph 5:
Judgment- Is the photograph successful in incorporating composition techniques, textures, colors, patterns, and balance (explain why/why not)? Also, does the photograph “catching your eye” (explain why/why not)?
Paragraph 6:
Conclusion- Answer the Essential Question Below
You Must cite evidence from your previous paragraphs to now address our Essential Question:

Works Cited Page
At the end of the paper, add a page and title it Works Cited. Below the title, alphabetically list a minimum of 3 websites used using the MLA format on the top of your source note page. Below each source, write the single annotated sentence from the bottom of that corresponding source notes page. Each source should be double spaced.
