Fraction Operations WebQuest

Introduction

Fractions are an important part of the mathematics curriculum and in the real world.  You use them when you measure and when you cook, so it's important that you understand how to use them.  In this WebQuest, you will be learning how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.

Task

Help!  Your teacher has forgotten how to perform operations with fractions and needs you to teach the class.  Working with a partner, you will learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions so well that you can design a lesson teaching them to your poor, forgetful teacher and your fellow students.  Once you feel like a pro, you will design a presentation using PowerPoint to teach your lesson.  You may also utilize any resources in the classroom such as fraction bars or fraction circles if they will help you.

Process

1. Let's start with adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators.

Begin your journey at Kahn Academy.  Watch the videos below and take any notes you deem necessary on the worksheet provided.  If you need another copy of the worksheet, you can download a copy here.

Addition: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions/Adding_and_subtracting_fractions/v/adding-fractions-with-like-denominators

Subtraction: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions/Adding_and_subtracting_fractions/v/subtracting-fractions

Then, get some practice in.  Answer 5 questions of each addition and subtraction.  Record your questions AND answers on the worksheet.

Time for another video!  Head over to https://learnzillion.com and in the search bar, type in LZ120.  Watch the video and take notes on the worksheet in the space provided.

Time for some more practice.  Visit ixl at http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-4/add-and-subtract-fractions-with-like-denominators to get even more practice.  Do at least 10 questions.  Record the questions AND answers on the worksheet.

Finally, it's play time!  You can play one or all of the following games to have some fun practicing your new addition and subtraction skills.

Fruit Shoot - do level 1a and/or level 1b.  Challenge yourself with level 2!

2. Now for adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

Begin your journey at Kahn Academy.  Watch the videos below and take any notes you deem necessary on the worksheet provided:

Addition:  https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fifth-grade-math/cc-5th-fractions-topic/cc-5th-add-sub-fractions/v/adding-fractions-with-unlike-denominators

Subtraction: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fifth-grade-math/cc-5th-fractions-topic/cc-5th-add-sub-fractions/v/subtracting-fractions-with-unlike-denominators

Then, get some practice in.  Answer 5 questions of each addition and subtraction.  Record your questions AND answers on the worksheet.

Addition: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fifth-grade-math/cc-5th-fractions-topic/cc-5th-add-sub-fractions/e/adding_fractions

Subtraction: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fifth-grade-math/cc-5th-fractions-topic/cc-5th-add-sub-fractions/e/subtracting_fractions

Head over to http://www.mathsisfun.com/fractions_addition.html and read the webpage, taking notes as you go along.  Play with the animation and view the pen and paper.  At the bottom, do questions 1 through 10 (NOT the worksheets link) and record the questions AND answers on your worksheet.

Finally, it's play time!  You can play one or all of the following games to have some fun practicing your new addition and subtraction skills.

Fruit Shoot - do level 3a  Challenge yourself with level 3b!

3.  Time to multiply some fractions.

Visit http://www.learner.org/courses/learningmath/number/session9/part_a/index.html and read the page to learn about how multiplying fractions works.  Take any notes you deem necessary on your worksheet.  Then visit http://www.learner.org/courses/learningmath/number/session9/part_a/try.html and try a few examples on your own.  Record the examples you try on your worksheet.

Similarly, visit http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/frames_asid_194_g_2_t_1.html to model multiplication.  Use the slider to model multiplication in the area model to see how multiplication works.  Record the examples you try on your worksheet.

Watch this video on multiplication: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre-algebra/fractions-pre-alg/multiplying-fractions-pre-alg/v/multiplying-fractions.  Take notes over the example.

Answer 5 practice questions correctly at https://www.khanacademy.org/math/pre-algebra/fractions-pre-alg/multiplying-fractions-pre-alg/e/multiplying_fractions_0.5.  Record both the questions AND answers on your worksheet.

Head over to http://ca.ixl.com/math/grade-7/multiply-fractions and try 10 practice problems.  Record both the questions AND answers on your worksheet.

It's game time once again!  Play as many of the games below as you want to practice your multiplication skills.

4.  And now on to dividing fractions.

Begin your journey today at Kahn Academy with 3 different videos.  The first video is an explanation of WHY dividing fractions actually works and the other two are examples.  Take Notes on your worksheet.

Video 1:https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions/div-fractions-fractions/v/conceptual-understanding-of-dividing-fractions-by-fractions

Example 1: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions/div-fractions-fractions/v/another-dividing-fractions-example

Example 2: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions/div-fractions-fractions/v/dividing-fractions-example

While you're partying at Kahn Academy, do some practice problems. Do 5 questions.  Record the problem and your answer on the worksheet. https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fractions/div-fractions-fractions/e/dividing_fractions_1.5

Time for some mad rhymes!!!!  Get on down to this dope beat: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMz4Hause-o

Now that you've gotten down, head on over to http://www.mathsisfun.com/fractions_division.html. Read the page, view the examples, view the pen and paper and take some notes on your worksheet.  When you're done, answer questions 1-10 at the botton on your worksheet.

Finally, go to http://www.ixl.com/math/grade-6/divide-fractions to get in even more practice.  Answer 10 questions correctly.  Record both the questions AND answers on your worksheet.

Now it's time to play!!!  Have some fun practicing your new division skills.

Evaluation

First of all, turn your worksheet in to Ms. Svajda to receive participation credit for the WebQuest - you did the work, so you deserve the credit.  Next, get working on your presentation to teach the class how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.

Here is a rubric on how your lesson/presentation will be graded.
