Getting 'EM WAVEY!

Introduction

As mentioned in the classroom, electromagnetics waves are all around us.
Electromagnetic waves are propagating waves that travel in space with both electric and magnetic components. These components oscillate at right angles to each other and to the direction of propagation.
Electromagnetic waves carry energy and momentum which may be given when they interact with matter.
Electromagnetic waves comprise of a series of waves whose frequencies and wavelengths extend over a broad range.

Task

Get into groups of 4-5 students. A type of wave will be allocated to you.

Using resources from the next page and your textbooks, discuss and plan out a powerpoint slide to describe the characteristics of the wave, and the applications in various fields. The presentation template slides are provided in your Moodle drive. You are given 25 minutes to complete this task.

After compiling the information, your group will need to present your findings to the class.

Process

You are being split into 7 groups, and each group will take each type of waves below. You are to, using the resources provided below, find out the characteristics of the waves (wavelength, frequency, features) and the application of each type of waves in the real world.

Conclusion

EM waves spans across a very broad spectrum. We apply this in many fields. That's why it's important to learn. :)
