The Kilauea Volcano is the youngest and most active Hawaiian shield volcano, located on the southern part of the Island of Hawai'i. Hawai'i is the southernmost and largest of the island chain, which is thanks widely to the volcanic activity in which it's expanded from. Kilauea volcano is near-constantly erupting from vents either on its summit or on the rift zones. At present, Kilauea volcano is still having one of the most long-lived eruptions known on earth, which started in 1983 on the eastern rift zone. It predominantly erupts basaltic lava in effusive eruptions, although occasionally it experiences explosive eruptions as well. Kilauea stands just under 4200 feet tall at it's highest point. It is said that Kilauea is the home to Pele, the volcano goddess of ancient Hawaiian legends, how neat is that?!
