Human Nutritional Requirements

Introduction

Agriculture is a primary form of land usage to provide humans with the food needed for sustenance.  In this webquest, you will research the nutritional needs of humans that are met by agricultural products.  Your focus will be on macronutrients and micronutrients.  While water and fiber are also considered essential nutrients, they will not be researched in this webquest.

Task

For this webquest, you will have 3 tasks:

Task 1) Create a concept map of the major macronutrients necessary for life.

Task 2) Create a concept map of the major micronutrients necessary for life.

Task 3) Create a presentation of the essential nutrients necessary for life.

All tasks will be submitted electronically, so remember to save and save often.

Process

Task I

1. Research to identify the 3 main categories of nutritional macronutrients and related information, including biological function(s), elemental composition, and structure.  Use the research to create a concept map with Lucidchart for Education (add from Google Apps).

2) Research to identify the 2 main categories of nutritional micronutrients and related information, including biological function(s), elemental composition, and structure. Use the research to create a concept map with Lucidchart for Education (add from Google Apps).

3) Using a presentation application of your choice, create a presentation of the macronutrients and micronutrients necessary for humans.  The presentation should include the biological function of the nutrients and sources of major nutrients required by humans.  Refer to the Evaluation for a more detailed explanation of presentation requirements.

Evaluation

Rubric will be added later for final proofing

1) Macronutrient concept map should include main category (1st level), the 3 types (2nd level) and characteritistics including biological function(s), elemental composition, and structure (3rd level).

2) Micronutrient concept map should include main category (1st level), the 2 types (2nd level) and characteritistics including biological function(s), elemental composition, and structure (3rd level).

3) The presentation should include:

-1 Title Slide with name

-1 slide describing macronutrients in general

-3 slides with biological function and examples/sources of each macronutrient

-1 slide describing micronutrients in general

-10 slides with biological function and examples/sources of micronutrients (5 of each type)

-1 slide with Bibliography of sources

Conclusion

Upon completion of this webquest, you should be able to:

...name the 3 macronutrients

...name the 2 micronutrients

...give examples of various macronutrients and micronutrients and the biological functions each provides.
