Major World Religions

Introduction

This site will lead you on an adventure to explore the world's major religions.  I'm sure you have a religion that you practice.  Many of us go to church/mass, others go to temple, and others practice meditation.  Do you know where these rituals or practices come from?  What are these religions called and where were they born?

I'm sure many of you have assumptions about religions based on what you have seen in the media, have heard from your parents/mentors, or have experienced yourselves.  However, this assignment will allow you to learn the facts about each of the 6 major religions.

Task

Historically, there are six major world religions (but there are many more than that!).  Those are Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Islam and this assignment will focus on those six.

Your tasks are going to be exploring, researching, and compiling information on each of the world religions listed above.  Where did they start?  What is their founding belief?  What is their text?  Who are the followers?  Where do they worship?

Process

Part One: Identification

  1. Start with a religion you know the least about.  You will be exploring all religions, however.
  2. Identify and describe the beliefs of this religion.
  3. Locate where this religion started.
  4. Identify its mode of worship (i.e. their book of worship, their house of worship, rules of worship).

Part Two: Presentation

  1. Create a presentation to present all your knewly founded information about each religion.  This can be a poster board, a PowerPoint, an illustrative essay (see me for example), or any other means of visual presentation.
  2. After creating your presentation, write a full page (12 point font, 1.5 line spaced, 1 inch margins) for each religion demonstrating what key or interesting facts you learned.  This means you will have 6 total pages written when you are done.

Conclusion

Good job!  You've made it to the end.  I hope this lesson has taught you a few new things and has opened up your eyes to the different views this world has.  Religion is major component of all cultures and can explain why people live the way they do or go about their day the way they do.  However, regardless of how different your religion may be from another, they all still have something in common.  Hopefully this lesson has helped you realize that.
