Mount Rushmore: Why are these Presidents so important?

Introduction

South Dakota. Picture yourself in South Dakota, staring up at this giant rock in which there are four faces carved into. Who are those people and why are their faces forever embedded there? That’s your job to find out! You will work in groups of four to figure out who these four important people are that are carved on Mount Rushmore and explain why you believe they are there. Each person in your group will specialize in one of the people.

Task

                                       By the end of this WebQuest you will: 

  • Pick one president that is on Mount Rushmore, each student in the group will have a differnet president. 
  • Do some information and create a small poster on that president
  • In your own words, describe why you think that the Preisdent you researched is so important that they are a part of Mount Rushmore.
Process

1. Your teacher will divide you all into groups of four. 

2. Each student must pick one president to do research on:

  • George Washington
  • Abraham Lincoln
  • Thomas Jefferson
  • Theodore Roosevelt

3. Research! Find out why your President was so special. What are some interesting facts? Don't forget that at the end you will tell the teacher why you think they're on Mount Rushmore. What sets them apart?

I will provide some websites for research on each of the Presidents. Do not be afraid to venture to other reasearch websites.

Evaluation

Students will be evaluated on a 1-5 scale. 1 being it is obvious that no time or effort was put into it and 5 being really good. 

  1. Creativity- Be creative. Use a lot of pictures! Use facts that will interest everyone. 
  2. Information- All information is true.
  3. Neatness- Poster is well put together. 
  4. Opinion- Students put why they think their President is on Mount Rushmore. This information must make sense.

Now that you have finished your research it's time to present to the class as a group!
