NC Lighthouses

Introduction

As a fourth grader, you're learning more about North Carolina. North Carolina's lighthouses are an important part of our state's history and beauty.  By completing this web quest, you'll learn more about the importance of the lighthouses.  You'll begin this project based learning web quest by focusing on one lighthouse that you want to study.  After choosing your lighthouse, you're ready to begin!

North Carolina is home to several lighthouses:  Bald Head Island, Bodie Island, Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, Currituck Beach, Oak Island, Ocracoke Island, Prices Creek, and Roanoke River.  Some of these are names you know while others may be new to you.  North Carolina lighthouses are a source of pride and great beauty for our state.  Let's explore the lighthouses and learn more about our state history.

Task

4.H.2: Understand how notable structures, symbols and place names are significant to North Carolina.

You will begin by exploring the North Carolina Lighthouses by watching a video from Our State Magazine about the lighthouses. You will choose one lighthouse to focus on for your project.  Have fun!!


Process

After you decide on the lighthouse you would like to research with your team, you will complete the following tasks.  

Task 1:  Watch the Prezi (attach earbuds before watching).  Scan through the prezi to your chosen lighthouse.  Watch the video and read the fun facts.  Add information to your lighthouse research chart.

Task 2:  Read informational text about your NC lighthouse.  Use the following links to obtain and record facts about the lighthouse.

Task 3:  Create a presentation to share the informative facts about the lighthouse to the class.  Your classmates will record your facts on their facts sheet during your presentation.  Therefore, make sure your facts are easily seen and understood by being in large font and on the screen for an appropriate amount of time.

Your team will decide which app you would like to use to present your information from the following choices.

Shadow Puppet.edu:  Easily create videos in the classroom! Students can make videos to tell stories, explain ideas, or document their learning.

 Snap-n-Write:  Create your own unique post card experience around the picture you share. Click or Pick a photo, type a short message with different fonts & colors

Evaluation

You will be graded using the NC Lighthouse Evaluation rubric.  Before you present your information to the class, you will evaluate your own work and your own group's work.  Please make sure you have given your best effort!
