Tenses:
what does tense mean in grammar?
A tense is a form taken by a verb to show the time of an action. There are three main tenses:
1- Present tense: things that are true when the words are spoken or written; or are generally true; or for some languages will be true in the future.
2- Past tense: things that were true before the words were spoken or written.
We are going to study the past tense.
Past Tense:
- Simple Past.
- Past Continuous.
- Past Perfect.
- Past Perfect Continuous.
We are going to focus on the past perfect tense.

Task

Process
When we use the past perfect tense?
We use the past perfect to talk about an action which happened before another action in the past.

The key words of this tense are:
1- After/ As soon as [Had+PP], Past Simple
2- Before/ By the time + Past Simple, [Had+PP]
Examples:
- I did not have any money because I had lost my wallet.
- Tony knew Istanbul so well because he had visited the city several times.
- Had Susan ever studied Thai before she moved to Thailand?
- She only understood the movie because she had read the book.
- A: Had you ever visited the U.S. before your trip in 2006?
B: Yes, I had been to the U.S. once before.
