Task

As a contractor who is building a house you need to know how to find perimeter and area.

  •  In order to become and expert on calculating perimeter and area you will explore several websites  to learn the formulas and how to calculate area and perimeter.

  • After you have explored these sites and you feel that you understand area and perimeter you will begin working on designing your floorplan for Mrs. Daisy.

  • Once you have completed your floor plan you will write a thank you letter to Mrs. Daisy thanking her for choosing you to design a floorplan for her.

STEP 1

You will be assigned a partner to complete the project with.

STEP 2

You and your partner will visit the websites below and practice with area and perimeter.

When you are finished exploring these sites you will write down either two facts, two things you learned, or two things you liked about these sites.  Turn this paper into your teacher before moving on to step 3.

STEP 3

When you feel that you understand perimeter and area well enough to do it on your own you may begin creating your floorplan for the house using graph paper.

Click on the link below to view sample floorplans.

1. Click on link

2.  Type in house criteria on left hand side

3.  Click search

4.  Choose a house

5.  Scroll down to the bottom to find floorplan sample

Sample Floorplans

Your floorplan must include at least:

  •          A living room, kitchen, 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a garage
  •          Each room must be labeled and colored a different color
  •          A fenced in backyard with the greatest amount of area possible and the least      amount of perimeter possible.
  •          A garden within the backyard shaped like a triangle

After completing your room designs you must calculate:

  •       The area and perimeter for each room
  •       The area and perimeter for the fenced in backyard
  •       The area and perimeter of the whole house
  •       The area and perimeter of the triangle garden

Letter Requirements:

Now that you are finished with your floorplan design you need to write Mrs. Daisy a letter thanking her for choosing you to create a floorplan. In your letter you need to list out your calculations for each room.  (Be careful with spelling,  grammar, and punctuation)
