Product Placement

Introduction

Now that you have learned about acids and bases, it is time for you to share your knowledge with the world. As we have learned in class, there are many acids and bases that we use in every day life. You, however, with your advanced knowledge of acids and bases, should be able to come up with an innovative way to use acids or bases in the home!

Task

Your task is simple. As a group, you will design an acid or base product, created to perform a common household task, and design an ad to sell your product. The goal of this project is for you to express your knowledge of acids and bases in a creative format, using a form of creative media that you personally enjoy.

Process

First, you as a group will need to decide on what your product will be! Remember it should be an acid or base.

Second, decide what the purpose of your product would be. It must have a specific household function

After that, you'll need to create an advertisement for you product. It can be a Online, TV, or in person pitch, directed at homeowners who might be interested in your product. As a team you should decide on what is the best type of advertisement to fit your product.

Here are some examples of household acid or base products that already exist:

Evaluation

Each advertisement will be judged on the following criteria:

1. Your advertisement should explicity mention your products' acidity or alkalinity, as well as it's chemical compound, the ions it will form, and it's specific pH level. (10.6.3.a - 10.6.3.d)

2. Your advertisement must address a specific household function that your product will perform. This must be something that is realistic and useful (something that people might actually want)

3. Your advertisement should be well spoken, using clear language, and make sense

4. Your advertisement should make logical arguments for the use of your product over other products

5. Your advertisement should be creative and fun!

Conclusion

You will present your advertisement to the class, either by showing it or speaking it to the class. Whoevers ad is voted the best by the class as a whole will also receive extra credit, so make sure your ad is not only useful but fun and entertaining!

GOAL: Sell an acid or base based product

ROLE: Salesperson for a production line

AUDIENCE: Adults whose homes might be directly benefitted by the use of your product

SITUATION: You have an acid or base product that you would like to sell

PRODUCT: Either an online, TV based, or door-to-door type sales pitch

STANDARDS: Your ad must mention the acidity or alkalinity of your product. Your product must have a clearly defined purpose as stated in your ad (i.e. it must have a specific function that it will perform). Your ad must use language that is clearly understandable. Your ad should be convincing (i.e. I should be convinced that your product WILL reliably perform this function). Your product must address a common problem that will occur across many types of households (You want to have a broad market base).

(Standards)

All Goals pulled from standard 10.6.3

  1. Relate ion concentration to pH values and to the terms acidic, basic,or neutral.

  2. Measure pH of common household and laboratory solutions.

  3. Identify acids and bases.

  4. Determine concentration of acids and bases using acid-base titration.

  5. Evaluate how pollutants modify the pH of various environments.

  6. Use pH Identification tools to identify pH of materials.

WHERETO

W - Students are expected to know how acids and bases can be applied in real life, as well as chemistry standards 10.6.3 a-d

H - Advertising (everyone knows students love television)

E - Examples of ad's and common household acids and bases, information on what are acids and bases, how they are formed, and what they do (both in class and in the webquest)

R - Students have to rework their knowledge of acids and bases into making something useful in the real world

E - Students will judge their own and each others' finished products based on the evaluative items provided

T - Students will be able to pick their own form of media according to their interests and capabilities in order to create their advertisement. If students are dissatisfied with the options provided, other options will be considered at the discretion of the instructor

O - Webquest!
