Puritanism Research Webquest

Introduction

Over the next few days, you will be researching various aspects of the Puritansm Era.

Task

In preparation for reading Arthur Miller's The Crucible, you will be expected to research various events and aspects of Puritan life, in the 1600's. You will also explore the authors' biographies and relate them to the literary themes to be studied.

Using this webquest, you will obtain information about the following topics:

  • Daily life in Salem in the 1600's
  • Puritanism and Government
  • Witchcraft
  • Witch trials of 1692
  • Biography of Arthur Miller
  • Characters from The Crucible

You will need to write the answers to questions on a separate piece of paper.

After each person has researched on the various topic above, you will be assigned to a group and asked to create a poster synthesizing the information you shared.

  1.  Describe the clothing worn by men and women in Salem. What types of fabrics were used. how did thier clothing support thier religious views?
  2. Describe the types of homes that existed in Salem. Explain what a palisage is and why it was necessary.
  3. Describe the family life of Puritans. What was expected of parents? Children?
  4. Describe a typical Puritan meal. How did their food and eating habits reflect thier religious views.
